Leftwich Injures Knee - At Hospital Getting MRI
Tomlin has completely mismanaged this whole QB situation and now they might have lost their most valuable guy that can play because they were afraid to play Roethlisberger with the second teamers so they put Leftwich at risk playing with lesser talent and now it came back to bite them.
Great job Tomlin!!

Your rationale in blaming Tomlin makes no sense. He got hurt because he didn't roll with the 1st team last week? Absurd.

So you'd rather Lefty start the preseason games and Franchise multi-mullion dollar QB Ben risk injury playing with lesser talent?
Wouldn't that mean Ben would be getting the MRI right now?

Updating a previous item, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Byron Leftwich (knee) left the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, with a left knee injury, reports ESPN.com. He was taken to an area hospital to undergo an MRI exam, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

You sir, are a moron. First off, learn to punctuate your posts. It will make it easier for people to read and understand each point you are trying to make. The way it is now, it sounds like you would be trying to say that whole post in one breath as fast as you can.
Second, Leftwich was about the 4th or 5th most valuable guy out there on offense. Mendenhall is clearly the most valuable with Ben on vacation. One could argue that Hines, Wallace, Heath, and Pouncey are more valuable as well.
Finally, what do you suppose Tomlin should have done? If Leftwich doesn't play, everyone will be complaining that he didn't get to play with the first team players two weeks in a row. If Ben doesn't play, everyone will be complaining that Ben needed the reps to compensate for the time he will miss.
Tomlin has three jobs to do in the pre-season. 1.) Prepare his players for the start of the regular season. This means ALL 75 players must be treated with the assumption that they will be playing opening day. 2.) Determine who is going to be on the team. This means getting a thorough evaluation of every player, and figuring out if and where they fit in. 3.) Determine what his depth chart will be. This means that the players have to play! Even the one's who are a lock to make the team already. Last week, we didn't know if Leftwich or Dixon would start. We knew both would be on the team, but we had to find out who was going to start. While most of the starters are pretty much set in stone, there are still a few spots that guys were competing for. Starting QB, starting CB, starting RG and RT, and starting FB.

Name-calling is one reason why there are so few people left here & so many over at that "other" board.
But I digress.
None of these QBs - P. Manning M. Ryan Garrard M. Moore Freeman Campbell A. Smith
Cutler Romo Schaub Flacco Favre Brees Hasslebeck Rivers
got injured tonight...because they did not play.
In addition, Carolina did not use DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart or Steve Smith tonight.
All the above players will play in week #1. Leftwich will not.

I agree with king cool and I don't believe he is a moron.
Tomlin has completely mismanaged the QB situation and others. Tomlin does not seem to have master plans, themes, or to allow this team to have an identity. This is what a head coach is supposed to be about. Look at what he has let our OC and offense do the past few seasons. His illpreparedness bothers me. He was faced this year with the greatest challenge of dealing with Ben's suspension and his decision making is as poor as it has ever been.
Leftwich played with the 2nd team most of this preseason. Everyone has been saying this could haunt us - what happened last night was beginning to be expected.
What was the big press to get Ben playing time - so he can sit back 5 weeks and not play (remember the bye week). Was 14 snaps last night worth it for him?
Our 1st round draft pick had some problems last night - presnap penalty, bad snap - not surprising given he is playing with 3 different qbs with three different cadences. I know someone will sound off that Pouncey needs to be adaptable - but he also needs to be able to get in rythmn just as WRs and tackles need to.
But watch the arrogant Tomlin turn this around now and say this is why he was giving Dixon so many snaps - to deal with injury situations.
Now what will tomlin do? Split snaps between Dixon and Batch?

Updating an ongoing story, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Byron Leftwich (knee) will miss two to four weeks because of a sprained medial collateral ligament, a source told Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Everyone's gotta step up. This is the first time in my life that I feel like the Steelers must treat every game as a postseason matchup out of the gate. Good, bad, awesome, abysmal... whatever it turns out to be, this will be one to remember.

I was at the game and thought the same thing. After watching clips of it on television recently though, it looks like it was a routine play and a nice pocket to step up into. The unfortunate thing was, is that when Lefty stepped into the throw, he swung his right leg for momentum after the throw and that left his plant leg to knock knees with one of our own players. It was a complete accident that could happen at any given time on any given play. Hell, it can even happen in practice. It wasn't like he got gang-tackled with about 6 guys at his knees.

Re: Leftwich Injures Knee - At Hospital Getting MRI
I couldn't really eat Tomlin's lunch for not deciding on the first-month starter out of the gate because obviously, if you watched the games, Neither Dixon nor Leftwich played well enough to take charge of the position. Chaz Batch did well coming off the bench cold against third and fourth stringers, but what else is there to go on? Nobody stepped up, period.
Blame Tomlin all you want. He has what he has to work with until #7 comes back and if you watched the same games we all did, he needed every quarter available in preseason to make his decision.

Tommylin may have mismanaged the QB situation but I think it makes no difference. It was only a matter of time before lefty got hurt

I'm already getting plastered and trying to find solace in laughing at all the "Cut Ben Dixon can win it all" crowd...

Well said.
IMHO, the one thing Tomlin mismanaged was the competition (or lack thereof) between Dixon and Leftwich way back to the beginning of minicamps. It took until the week of the 3rd preseason game for Dixon to actually get preparation and playing time with the first unit. Hope that does not come back to bite us in the ass.
