Not participating in free agency caught up w/ Steelers?
When you don't particicpate in FA, it becomes imperative that you have excellent drafts. We haven't. (See- Tony Hills, Limas Sweed, Shipley, Urbik, Bailey, Frank the Stank... I could go on but I'm already crying). Basically, the lack of productive draft picks coupled with the unwillingness to be a player in FA have left us without depth behind our aging stars. Thoughts?
You have Lee Bodden, Aaron Kampman, and Kyle Vanden Bosch out there in FA. They might make good stop-gap players until the draft picks have been develop.

I definitely agree the time to go after a mid-level UFA is now. The Stillers draft has been abysmal in the mid-rds for yrs. I would like to wait to see if Urbik can develop.
That being said, I'd like to see them go after Wilfork if NE doesn't franchise him: he's 3 yrs younger than Hampton & they can go after a safety in the first 2 rds & let Clark walk, thus saving $ for Wilfork.
Bodden could be a decent nickel back replacing Townsend, & either Kampman or Vandenbusch should have something left in the tank.

I don't know.....other than NE, the Steelers are the only team to win more than once during the past 10-years. The Steeler's have won twice in the past five years. Compare that to, say Washington, and I'd say the Steelers have a decided advantage.
I'll agree the draft has been lacking; however, for every dud, we always seem to pick-up someone that can help out (think Parker, Wallace, Harrison, etc).
What the Steeler's refuse to do is overpay. I think they actually do a very good job of matching up a players future ability (not what they've done in the past) with what they are willing to pay. I gotta respect that although I think we would all agree that fellas like Farrior are now "out of the money" and, in retrospect, maybe the Steeler paid a bit more than they should have (obviously, what we don't know is what the second best alternative existed at the time of signing their on FA).
No, the Steelers approach this like a business............and they should.
Frankly, I'm a bit miffed at all professional sports these days and I like to see the Steelers shove it up someone's ass every once and a while.

Bodden is the only one i would be interested in. Kampman and Vandenbosch are both 4-3 guys. Kampman was not as productive in the 3-4 this past year.

Kyle V has been injury plagued and that plays into what he's likely to be able to contribute in the future. He'll probably want a lot of money based on past performance. An earlier poster made a good point that the Steelers style has been very different than the Skins, as have their respective results. I say stick to the proven formula of making smart acquisitions in FA and not overpaying. Farrior would be one exception, but generally the front office knows what the hell they're doing.

Shipley? Bailey? You expected something out of them? Ship didn't have a place on the team because Legursky is just better. Last years class brought in some nice depth. Sunny Harris, Ramon Foster, Johnson, Burnett. There's some potential there.
I think they draft well enough that they don't have to venture out into free agency often, but they still bring in guys that fit the system. Seriously though, why would KC let Keyaron Fox walk... I'm still waiting for his leg to fall off or something. Bodden might be next in line.
