call me paranoid but that's why i don't accept drinks from anyone unless i know them, or it's handed to me from the barkeep themselves. heard too much fucked up stories when i was in the military, sorta makes you careful about taking drinks someone hands you.

one possible case could be the guy suffered an aneurysm which caused a stroke. heavy alcohol consumption puts people at risk for that at even higher risk while they're drinking.
