Davis signed?? Why not bring up Issac Redman?

Postby Tonydesal » Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:30 pm

Ok, maybe I just don't know how the NFL works.

Can anyone explain to me, with "the tank" put on IR;

Can the Steelers sign Issac Redman to the team? :?:

I would rather see Redman brought up, but that doesn't replace the need for a fullback, with Spaeth and Johnson hurt. We don't want to waste Heath back there blocking like last week. Davis already knows the offense, and he should be pretty motivated after being cut this season. However, there are better FBs out there. When last i looked, Kreider was out there (he still has some pop left), Boomer Grigsby isn't bad, and IMO those two FBs from Hard Knocks Chris Pressley (he may be on a practice squad) and Fui Vakapuna are worth a look as well.

If they try to put him on the roster he first is subject to waivers.Any team can claim him.He played well in camp and exhibitions and has potential but it's not like he's the next Emmit Smith. When the Steelers cut him and put him on the practice squad none of the 31 other teams claimed him.

I don't mean to be naive, but Heath was, at least, effective doing the FB duties? Enough so that it made a noticeable difference in the line watching a this big guy run through it.

Untrue. According to league rules...

Section 2. Signing With Other Clubs:
(a) Any player under contract to a Club as a practice squad player shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club at any time during the League Year, to serve as a player on any Club’s Active or Inactive List, and any Club is completely free to negotiate and sign such a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period, except that such player shall not be permitted to sign a Player Contract with another Club to serve as a practice squad player while under contract as a practice squad player. (b) Notwithstanding Subsection (a) above, a practice squad player may not sign an NFL Player Contract with his Club’s next opponent later than 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the sixth day preceding the game (except in bye weeks, when the prohibition commences on the tenth day preceding the game).

They can sign him without passing through waivers. But if he was all that, don't you think SOMEONE would have grabbed him off waivers before...

I don't know. I think Redman did more in 4 preseason games than Davis did the entire 2008 season. Granted it was preseason, but I think Redman is a much better all around player.
I think the coaching staff is probably regretting cutting Russell at this point. That seemed like a bad move to me when they did it, even worse now.

Why not bring up Redman?

Because it makes sense, unlike most of the play calling this season.

Because they're looking for someone to block for the tailback. Tank failed. Johnson got hurt.

It goes against our philosophy...
Redman's not a fullback, but I'd love to see what he could do with the 1st team @ true game speed.
Huummmm........

I agree with everyone who has mentioned that we need a FB, and I don't know that Redman can lead block. We saw what happened when "The Tank" was put at FB...he couldn't block a soul.

Looks like lots of fans are getting their wish come true, as Redman has been activated from the PS. Now let the debate being about how they should use him, how many handoffs he should get, etc.
