Just run 5-wide and drop the run game altogether.
Stop faking a concern over running the football, Coach Tomlin. Coach Arians has been laughing at you for two years now.
Trade Parker for the best draft pick you can get (4th round), do the same with Mendy (5th round), keep Moore (the only productive back we had last night and all he did was catch), and bring in 8 or 9 receivers. Go five wide, utilizing Miller as one of the wideouts and just let Ben go no-huddle.
In 5 wide, someone is always running a quick pattern that would net 2-3 yards which is better than the 1.6 yards per rush we averaged last night. When we want to run, just let it be and end around with either Wallace or Holmes.
We can call this the "Arianscat" offense. Or more like "Arianscant"

I am with you on this. I don't know why anybody bothers with the run game at all in the NFL. The rules favor passing. Linemen on both sides are 300+ pounds and can't be moved, there is no place to run. Maybe if you've got an Adrian Peterson, it's different, but most teams don't. Give me an accurate passer over a good running back anytime.

I'm no big fan of Airhead....
On the other hand, the run and shoot, somehwat in vogue back in the 1990s, is an example of what happens with consistent multiple five WR sets.
Like the Steeler did the other night, it has its place and can be effective. Trying to make it your staple offense is right up there with blitzing on every down on D. Teams adjust and learn how to routinely defend it.
This is the NFL. All strategies, formations, etc. have an inherent weakness. The bad news is the other teams get paid to figure that out and exploit it. Therefore, sucess, for the most part, comes down to (a) talent; and (b) minimizing errors and mistakes versus a particular formation, play, strategy, etc.

Obviously, you can't jettison the running game entirely.
But, N.E. has had success dumping off to Welker & hitting Moss deeper down the field. Then they mix in the occasional run, often from the shotgun.
Another thing(attention B. Arians) - When it's 3rd & 1, it's permissable to use 3 wideouts & still run the ball for the 1st down. You don't need to bunch up 11 guys & pound it all the time.

Don't get me wrong.
Our line run blocked like shit.
Parker and mendy were indecisive
Neither hit a hole.
However, Arians still calls plays like we have a ton 5 line and Bettis in the back field.
Parker has speed and Mendy is susposidly a good pass catching back. How about a sweep, quick pitch or a screen to Mendy. Arians does not call run plays to maximize the talent he has. Period

I agree Steelman. And in fact, with Mendy and FWP it seems as though he is completely backwards in how he uses them. Luckily, Moore seems to find opportunities to catch the ball out in space but its more Ben than Bruce that sets that up.

I just want to see FWP catch a 10yd pass with a linebacker trying to cover him in space.
Just once.
Bruce please. Call it an early X-mas present to Steeler Nation.

Remember McAfee leading The Bus thru the holes? Kreider's killer pancakes for the Bus? Now we send FWP out on his own with a line that can't block for crap and expect him, (he is NOT a tackle breaker), to get us 2 or 3 yards when everyone knows he's getting it. At least put some trickery into the damn play, a fake toss, a fake end around, ANYTHING to lighten the pressure.

Bruce just doesn't think it's fair to use trickery, deception or decoys. Every time he uses this "3 WR, 1-Back" crap, he brings them all in tight, the box shrinks to where it looks like a small town at the LOS.
What I don't get is why Ben doesn't audible out of this bogus jive? All we're lookin' for is 2 or 4 yds, send 2 of the 3 WR's thru the secondary and have the inside WR (Hines????) do a drag to the sideline. Geez, maybe even a quick "out" pattern. I know it might resemble NE with Welker but it works.
NE hasn't had a running back since Corey , maybe. They pick up Fred Taylor who's been around since leather helmets. They use the pass to set the run and we have better personnel than they do. More speed and guys willing to go to the middle. Speed kills, let's freakin' use it.
