Steelers = Running Team

Postby thesteelhammer » Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:38 pm

since the NFL merger in 1970, the Pittsburgh Steelers have rushed for more than 5,000 yards more than any other team.

All that will wash away if Arians has a couple of more years...

Or if our offensiveline doesn't return to it's dominant state that it was throughout the 70's, 90's and early 00's. (due to my age, I don't know much from the 80's considering i'm turning 25 soon.)

Barry Foster had 1690 yards by himself one year!

Damn do I miss those days. We didn't have any QB's worth a shit but we could keep them healthy. :sucrutches:

I think that, we have been an offense in transition since coach Tomlin took the reigns.

Our offensive strength is Ben and the WR's.

Unfortunately, the O-Line is our detriment..along with Airians, of course.

I do not expect much out of the running game this season, however I think pass pro will be better because of continued continuity.

From a talent standpoint, overall our O-line is garbage but better in pass pro than run blocking, were they seldom get push or create creases.

I expect to see more bubble and underneath screens this season, to Holmes, Wallace, McDonald, and Logan. More so on first down, in place of our typical first down Parker Plunge, for one.

I think we are seeing the same situation that Dan Marino had with the Dolphins. The OL is adept (not by any means superb) at Pass Blocking, but cannot open holes in the running game. Perhaps this is by design that we are focusing more on Passing than Running.

It would be nice to run the ball better, but personally I'll take 23rd in the league if we keep collecting rings. ;)

A better running game will make for more effective passing attack. Especially with our quarterback and recievers. The Dan Marino comparision scares me, they never won anything :stop:

Hey, wait just a minute. Just hold on, there fellas. Mr. Bruce Arians, charter member of the Pgh Chapter of the Mensa Club, has informed us, in no uncertain terms - genuis that HE is, that a certain Mr. Willie Colon is one of the top 2 or 3 tackles in league. I am not kidding, I actually saw a quote to that effect in the paper.

I live in SC. When I see the games on TV, all I see is BB on his ass and the #74 with the letters "COLON" above it looking around waiting for something to happen. Maybe it's me or just my good looks but just once I would sure like to see Ol' Willie at least help his meal ticket up off the turf once in awhile.

Is it me?

if we can develop a running game with mendenhall, fast willie. and frank the tank, it will help big ben in his passing ,and prolong his career.

the problem is... when we do run, the defense knows it's still going to be between the tackles. so they can just stack the box and blitz anyway.

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over then expecting a different result. WHAT is the difference between this year's line and last year's line? THE PRICE TAG! A year of playing together only works when everyone actually plays in their position for the year as a collective. The whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

They are the same line that dropped BB 7 like a hot potato 46 times last year and then acted like they proved something in the Super Bowl. They proved that BB 7 is an amazing football player who almost singlehandedly pulled us to NUMBER 6!

Here is a study for someone with more time on their hands than me. Evaluate each sack from last year, and determine if it was a breakdown in the line or if it was due to BB freelancing. Reduce the total number by the number of BB freelancing and see how that number matches with the rest of the NFL. Then you can guage the effectiveness of our pass blocking.

No question, the OL needs to improve run blocking. That doesnt require a tape review to see.

BINGO! SCM, YOU NAILED IT AGAIN! They ALL know what's coming, it's just deciding which tackle spot. They got a 50% of getting it right with their 5 guys there being blocked by 3, maybe 4 of our guys.
Of course, in today's "Arians" math that means, " Gee fellas, can't you just let us get to the LOS once in a while, OK?"

That's been done by the MENSA MASTER himself, our OC, aka The Blood Clot! He says line gave up less than half of all those sacks I believe. StillMill can correct this butBruce says the line not at fault. Might be so but then why does BB have to scramble so much? Because 3 guys in patterns covered by 4 or 5 and there is no back to dump off to unless Moore is in there?

BTW, do we make SB last year without Moore's efforts? I say "No way!" Best pick up since Farrior (I like his work ethic) or Kevin Greene. Thoughts?
