3rd WR spot wide open

Postby thesteelhammer » Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:05 pm

Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Shaun McDonald is in the mix for a spot on the rotation at wide receiver behind WR Hines Ward and WR Santonio Holmes. Head coach Mike Tomlin said the spots behind Ward and Holmes will be wide open when the team starts training camp. "They didn't tell me what my role is going to be," said McDonald. "We're all competing."

I think those that thing this job belongs to Sweed are jumping the gun.

Any one have anything on McDonald? Is he a player or a Cedric Wilson clone? Don't know anything on him?

Also, what is the line on Martin Nance, Ben's college mate? Read a while back he was emerging as someone to watch. I never see him mentioned (as well as Baker)as a candidate for anything?

I don't think Baker has any shot of making the roster. He's had his opportunity in the rotation yet hasn't done much of anything. McDonald had a 900+ yard season w/ the Lions a year ago so he will be an upgrade over Baker at the #4 spot. Sweed will be given the opportunity at #3 for the first few games of the season, and if he proves he can catch the deep ball, will maintain his spot. If not, I see Tomlin putting McDonald at #3, Sweed at #4 and Wallace at #5.

Sweed needs to catch the ball. He seemed to get open, but couldn't catch. Nice DB skills. ;) Nance should be kept on the practice squad if for no other reason than to keep Ben happy.

I think that Sweed is a bust. But I thought Holmes was gonna be a bust too. So who knows?

I agree baker is probably done unless he can be used on special teams. aka sean Morey but I doubt it or we would have seen it last year.

If Sweed takes care of the drops he can be the #3. However, McDonald could be more of a compliment depending on the situation. McDonald is more in the Welker/Ward mold of a quick screen/slant receiver and Sweed is more of a deep threat. I think both will see playing time when the regular season starts and performance will dictate from their.

Wallace will be a special teamer this year unless someone gets hurt.

One other thing.

Not only do you have to like the talent of the receivers. The 3-5 guys have a lot of upside potential.

This is a deeper unit than most people will think. The training camp battle will be awesome.

What destroyed the old site was prolonged technical difficulty and every body that was there knows it. There was a lot of drama but that didn't destroy any thing but some egos.

Keep in mind some (not all but some) of those "technical difficulties" were caused by certain of those bruised egos.

Now lets get back to talking about the WRs because it is one of the areas the front office has actually addressed this off-season. (unlike the O-line)

i think we're all just bored because there's no football yet

so people are getting restless and in arguments about things you can't prove. (sweed)

My only point was: Judging a wide out based on his rookie campaign is lunacy.
