Why the stillers line sucks!

Postby darthsteel » Sun Apr 26, 2009 3:36 pm

colbert has shown to be clueless in recent yrs when int comes to oline, this is another boggling yr in the draft!
how does duke and meredith go in the 5th and the stillers fraft urbik in the 3rd?
robinson looks like a guy who can be a 10 yr starter, urbick looks like a guy who mite not be able to even play at the nfl level!
who knows but it with colberts oline track record this is alarming!

[Pittsburgh Steelers]
Kraig Urbik
SELECTED BY: Steelers Round 3 (15)

SI Grade
3.56
GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
G
Class:
Senior
School:
Wisconsin
Conference:
Big 10
Ht., Wt.:
6-5, 328
40 Time:
5.33

BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter awarded all-Conference honors the past two seasons. Started his career at tackle before moving to guard as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Large, versatile blocker with a solid game. Strong at the point, stays square, and jolts defenders with good hand punch. Powerful, knocks opponents off the line, and works blocks hard. Keeps his feet moving, anchors in pass protection, and plays with a nasty attitude. Displays good vision and works well with line-mates. Breaks down well, and to his credit, consistently plays with good knee bend. Can slide laterally in a small area.

NEGATIVES: Slow if asked to pull across the line of scrimmage or block in motion. Must improve his blocking balance.

ANALYSIS: Urbik has been tremendously durable and productive for Wisconsin, and he is a blocker with the ability to play several different positions on the offensive line. He lacks the great upside, yet he possesses enough skill to have a long NFL career.

PROJECTION: Fourth/Fifth Round

how are these 2 players not on the stillers rite now and the big oaf above is?

[Carolina Panthers]
Duke Robinson
SELECTED BY: Panthers Round 5 (27)

SI Grade
3.83

GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
G
Class:
Senior
School:
Oklahoma
Conference:
Big 12
Ht., Wt.:
6-5, 329
40 Time:
5.28

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors since his sophomore campaign, and named as an All-America player the past two seasons.

POSITIVES: Explosive, small area blocker with a large amount of upside. Gets into blocks, bends his knees, and keeps his feet moving throughout the action. Jolts defenders at the point of attack, displays power, and gets movement run blocking. Stays square, effectively fights with his hands, and shows good upper body strength. Always looking for someone to hit, and easily controls opponents once engaged in a block. Keeps his head on a swivel, and works well with teammates.

NEGATIVES: Sets with a narrow base, lacks balance, and falls off blocks. Not fluid moving on his feet, and lumbers about the field. Struggles the further away from the line of scrimmage he's required blocker.

ANALYSIS: Robinson has been a terrific player at Oklahoma, and he offers the skills to be a starter in the NFL. He is a solid, yet not spectacular, prospect who could flourish in a power blocking system that does not require him to move far from the line of scrimmage.

PROJECTION: Second/Third Round

[Jamon Meredith - T]
Sean Meyers/Icon SMI

[Green Bay Packers]
Jamon Meredith
SELECTED BY: Packers Round 5 (26)

SI Grade
3.82

GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
T
Class:
Senior
School:
South Carolina
Conference:
SEC
Ht., Wt.:
6-5, 304
40 Time:
4.91

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter used at both tackle spots as well as offensive guard. Suffered through his senior season with an ankle injury.

POSITIVES: Athletic tackle who plays with terrific fundamentals. Bends his knees, sets with a wide base, and blocks with terrific leverage. Keeps his feet moving throughout the action, and displays the ability to slide off the edge, covering a lot of area. Shows top footwork in space. Stays square, anchors in pass protection, and nicely adjusts the oncoming defenders. Extends his hands into opponents and keeps them away. Displays solid movement skills and effective blocking in motion. Quickly picks up blitzes and works well with teammates.

NEGATIVES: Must improve his blocking balance, as he's on the field too much. Does not consistently attack assignments. His passion for the game and toughness has been questioned by NFL scouts.

ANALYSIS: When he hits on all cylinders, Meredith is one of the better pass protectors in the draft. He comes off a poor senior campaign and will be selected much later than his talents warrant. Meredith offers a lot of upside, and he could very easily break into the starting lineup at the all-important left tackle position if he gets his game back on track and consistently plays on a high level.

PROJECTION: Second Round

the stillers could not package both their 5ths to move up 8 spots to get robinson or meredith who were projected as 2nd rounders?
instead they draft 2 players that have a small chance of making the team? you got to be kidding me!

[Pittsburgh Steelers]
Frank Summers
SELECTED BY: Steelers Round 5 (33)

SI Grade
3.02
GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
RB
Class:
Senior
School:
UNLV
Conference:
Mountain West
Ht., Wt.:
5-9.5, 241
40 Time:
4.65

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter who led UNLV in rushing the past two seasons, posting 183/740/8 as a senior, while also adding 13/150/2 as a pass catcher.

POSITIVES: Explosive, well-built ball carrier best running north-south. Patient back who waits for blocks to develop and finds the running lanes. Runs with an aggressive style, turns his shoulders up the field, and drives through the hole, running over opponents. Keeps the play in bounds working to pick up as much yardage as possible and a punishing runner on the inside. Follows blocks everywhere on the field, and displays a good amount of quickness. Powerful in his lower body, breaks arm tackles to pick up yardage off initial contact, or falls forward when tackled. Nifty for a 240-pound back.

NEGATIVES: Not an elusive ball carrier who creates yardage. Loses a lot of momentum when he must change direction. Lacks the speed and agility to turn the corner.

ANALYSIS: Summers has been a productive ball carrier at UNLV, yet he was out of place in their spread offense last season. He offers potential as a short-yardage ball carrier or blocking back who can be placed on the field during third-down situations.

PROJECTION: Free Agent

[Pittsburgh Steelers]
Joe Burnett
SELECTED BY: Steelers Round 5 (32)

SI Grade
3.39
GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
CB
Class:
Senior
School:
Central Florida
Conference:
C-USA
Ht., Wt.:
5-9.5, 192
40 Time:
4.58

BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter awarded all-Conference honors at both cornerback and return specialist since his freshman season. Defensive totals last year included 44/4/11 when he also averaged 28.7 yards on 26 kick returns with two scores and a 14.5 yard average on 26 punt returns. Junior defensive totals included 64/6/12 with 50/1/3 as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Solid cover cornerback who brings the element of a return specialist to his game. Physical, aggressively comes up the field to defend the run or mixes it up with opponents out of routes. Displays good awareness, has a burst of closing speed, and possesses good ball skills. Quickly breaks to the pass, and he is a hard hitter who lays his body on the line to stop opponents.

NEGATIVES: Not fluid pedaling in reverse, and does not possess the top-end speed. Coming off a disappointing senior campaign.

ANALYSIS: Burnett has been very productive on the college level and nicely projects to the NFL as a sixth or seventh defensive back that will be used to return punts or kicks. He lacks the great upside, yet he has enough skill to be a productive player for an NFL team.

PROJECTION: Sixth Round

If they were so highly covetted, why did they slip to the 5th round? They were overvalued by ESPN. This reminds me of Elton Brown and another no name LB that were supposed to be high 2nd rounders a few years back. People complained all day on here because they both slid to the 5th round and we didn't take them. They wanted a good paper draft so that on Monday Mel Kiper, Jr would say, "Look at the value the Steelers got, a 2nd round grade prospect Duke Robinson and Jamon Meredith in the 5th round. Wowie." Who cares what they were ranked. They slid to the 5th round, no one wanted them.

On the other hand, Frank "the Tank" Summers was a player Tomlin thought highly of. I remember that they brought him in and had only good things to say. I am not sure of the CB prospect, but we need some bodies back there. The Steelers will refer to their value chart and private interviews over the ESPN/Mel Kiper's value chart every single time.

how many other teams outside the he bottom of the leage needs starting calibre olinemen? again the shit teams all got the top studs in the draft then filled othere needs.. so this was the draft that 2 highly regarded prospects stayed on the board!

every yr a few good players fall because teams address needs after the studs are off the board.

To me the meridith thing is crazy since there is probably no chance we sign both colon and starks next season especially if colon takes his game to another level. Worst case scenerio is you get a guy with 2nd round projection in the 5th(via trading up 6 spots or so) to push for a spot that will be vacated next season. If he does'nt pan out, you spent a 5th rounder and took a shot at a player who was highly rated in a severe need position.

the 4th round down is a big reach anyway so why not reach for something you need desperatley that fell 3 rounds farther then predicted?

Are you serious? I don't recall ANY drafts where a player slid to the 5th round because teams had already addressed that need. Name ONE time. Fall to the end of the first, second, maybe third? Yes. 5th? No. Well, we really like Lamar Woodley, but we already addressed that need. Lets wait and see if he is available in the 6th round. The farther a player drops, the more his value goes up. Teams will grab him at a point, no matter how much they "don't need him." Think of it this way, the Browns weren't taking Matt Sanchez with the 5th pick. He had little value to them. However, if he was still around in the second round when they picked, they would probably nab him. By the third round, he is taken even though they have 2 other starting caliber QBs because of the value.

To address your other statement...How many teams other than the bottom teams need a starting calibre offensive lineman. Let me think...ALL OF THEM. No one is so stacked at Offensive Line that they would think, well, here is a 2nd round prospect in the 4th round. We don't need him. We are already stacked. 6 Guards were taken in the 3rd to 5th round before Duke. That means they wanted a Guard, but felt Duke was inferior. 6 Tackles were taken in the 3rd to 5th round before Meredith. That means they felt he was inferior.

And here is the answer to your question. ESPN had him valued as a 2nd round talent. He was NOT a 2nd round grade to any teams in the draft. You know how I know? No teams took him in the 2nd round. No teams took him in the 3rd round. No teams took him in the 4th round. Every team had at least 1 opportunity to grab him and upwards of 8 (Patriots). If they graded him at 2nd round talent, they would have taken him. Simple as that.

.

I have to agree with your arguments. There is more complaining about our drafting practices on a SB winning team than I can understanding. Outside of our own fans we have one of the best reputations for building through the draft and UFA. If Kiper were so friggin smart he would be making better money as a GM. I like to use him for reference, but no more than say Scott Wright of Draft Countdown. These guys watch more film than I could ever imagine, but that doesn't mean their conclusions are always on target. Mill puts a lot of time in on this site reviewing film, and I appreciate and respect the heck out of that, but it doesn't mean I always agree with him. As much as the FO frustrates me, I somehow think they have this draft thing figured out. Making your own assessments as a franchise and sticking to your plan has paid off for them. How many scouts and FO people do we have that could probably put Mayock and Kiper to shame?
