Who's available Sunday?
With the first two rounds of the 2009 NFL draft in the books, here's a look at some of the better players (listed by position) available in Rounds 3 through 7 tomorrow.
QB: Several big names are out there, and any could be selected depending on the offensive system they best fit -- Sam Houston State's Rhett Bomar, Texas A&M's Stephen McGee, Alabama's John Parker Wilson, Ball State's Nate Davis, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, Louisville's Hunter Cantwell and Missouri's Chase Daniel are all available.
RB: N.C. State's Andre Brown, Iowa's Shonn Greene, Liberty's Rashad Jennings, Virginia's Cedric Peerman (4.34 40 at the combine, best among backs) and Michigan State's Javon Ringer are all sitting there. Remember that the Texans landed West Virginia's Steve Slaton in Round 3 a year ago.
WR: Penn State's Derrick Williams, Oklahoma's Juaquin Iglesias, North Carolina's Brandon Tate and Florida's Louis Murphy and his 4.32 40 time are all still on the board. Expect teams like the Bears and Jets to be biting early on Sunday.
TE: Several potentially special players can be had, including versatile Rice TE James Casey, South Carolina's Jared Cook, Missouri's Chase Coffman, Southern Miss' Shawn Nelson and Florida's Cornelius Ingram.
OL: The elite tackles are obviously gone; South Carolina's Jamon Meredith and Penn State's Gerald Cadogan look to be the best remaining. Many of the draft's top-ranked guards are still awaiting employment, including Oklahoma's Duke Robinson, LSU's Herman Johnson and Wisconsin's Kraig Urbik. The best centers left are probably Alabama's Antoine Caldwell and Penn State's A.Q. Shipley.
DL: Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson is awash in physical gifts, but can he pull it all together? He remains a project without a home. DEs Jarron Gilbert (San Jose State) and Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. (Richmond) are also waiting to hear their names called. Top remaining tackles include Purdue's Alex Magee and LSU's Ricky Jean Francois.
LB: Ohio State's Marcus Freeman, LSU's Darry Beckwith and South Carolina's Jasper Brinkley remain after many of the versatile hybrid DE/LBs were snapped up on Saturday.
CB: Vanderbilt's D.J. Moore, Maryland's Kevin Barnes and Cincinnati's Mike Mickens probably thought they'd be employed by now. Don't expect them to last much longer.
S: Alabama's Rashad Johnson and Wake Forest's Chip Vaughn are likely to be taken early Sunday, probably in Round 3.
