Lefty to sign 2-year deal with Bucs

Postby hschultz » Sun Apr 12, 2009 11:12 am

:-(

Not happy.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4062212

Free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich has agreed to a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a source told ESPN's Michael Smith.

The Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers also were interested in Leftwich, who joins a depth chart in Tampa that includes Luke McCown, Josh Johnson, and Brian Griese.

Leftwich, 29, a first-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Marshall in 2003, won a Super Bowl ring last season as a backup with the Steelers.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder has started just eight games since 2006, his last season with the Jaguars. He played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.

Leftwich passed for 303 yards with two touchdowns in five appearances with the Steelers last season as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.

ugh. I'm right there with ya schultz. I haven't seen the $$ for this deal yet, but I'm sure that the bucs didn't exactly sell the farm to get Lefty. I think another $2 million over 2 years could have kept lefty with us. Now we've got Batch who is almost over the hill and Dixon who has zero experience. We really need to go heavy on O-line in the draft now to protect Ben.

Wow, that really sucks. What's the plan now? Stick with Batch who's a tackle away from being crippled or go with the kid who has zero experience. I hope Dixon kicks ass in preseason and gets the job. I love me some Charlie Batch, but he's definitely over the hill and his skills are in sharp decline.

Leftwich would have come back to PGH only if he didn't get a chance to start
somewhere else. He probably will win the job in TB considering who they have
under contract. He got three things from the Stillers: a paycheck, an opportunity
to get in the back of some GM's mind, and a big ring.

As I already said, "chance to start" is a huge factor in Lefty's financial future. It's well worth the risk of being on a bad team vs. solid team like Pgh. The average starter makes 900% more $ than a back up. If I were BL I'd hold out to try to win a starting job too. If you ends up being a starter his career will bring him mad props of $. Plus, he WANTS to PLAY. I'd have been shocked if Pgh got him to stay having no chance to start other than injury.

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed unrestricted free-agent QB Byron Leftwich (Steelers) to a two-year deal worth $7.5 million, according to a source. He is scheduled to make $2 million in 2009 and is due a $3.5 million roster bonus for 2010. If the team decides to pay the bonus, Leftwich will make $5 million in 2010.

Wasn't going to get that in Pittsburgh

also
Ryan O'Halloran, of The Washington Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Byron Leftwich left a contract offer from the Washington Redskins worth the veteran minimum on the table. Leftwich opted to agree to a deal with the Buccaneers.

Lefty got his ring - good for him. Batch is tailor-made for backup role for yr or 2 til Dixon is ready.
