Free agents STILL worth looking at (and Pgh won't bother)
Obviously I am not asserting to sign all of the following. But I'd love to see 1 of the WRs signed and one OL. Won't happen though. And before anyone claims it's not Pgh's way to sigh big name FAs, these AREN'T big name FAs! They are all bargain type players, it would appear.
WR Drew Bennett - Tall, fast WR with good hands. Not a #1, but we don't need a 1. Would be a great 3 or 4, depending on how Sweed does. He'd also come very cheap. Why not add depth to the WR unit?
WR Ronald Curry - Guy flashed big time play making at times. He was stuck as a Raider - no QB last few years to speak of; mad house of the jump suit.
WR Reggie Williams - mostly a bust so far but had 11 TDs in 2007. Big guy. As a #4, maybe a steal.
OT George Foster - 6-5, 338, started 3 years in Denver before going to loser land Detroit (noting a player does or doesn't do doesn't count in Detroit!) I'd feel a lot better with Foster at RT and Colon at RG. EVERYONE on earth knows Colon is better suited at OG. Since when are OT short with short arms? Foster is only 28, and should be in his prime.
OG Chris Naeole - Getting old, but has a few years left. he's a battler.
SS Mike Brown - Not sure why Bears aren't bringing him back; he has been a huge play maker over the years and was a big part of Chicago winning when they did. Don't know if he could play SS, as Troy is also a SS and if Brown can't also play FS then it would be a waste.

How many ppl are in here? Really. I want to know. This is some good stuff to hash over and not a single person has anything to add. There are quality, cheap WRs and OL to consider. But Pgh wastes time with feigns such as playing footsie with Galloway. If you're not improving you are getting worse. What is Pgh doing to improve?

There are not very many regular posters coming in these days. I'd say a couple of dozen, maybe.
And, no new members have been allowed to join since about January 27, when something broke in the new-member addition software and no one on the staff has fixed it yet.
Plus, we have banned a few folks, at least temporarily.
I read that the Stillers were negotiating a contract with Galloway when he signed with the Patriots. It seems they were "trying."
Maybe the team thinks it can make another run with these guys. Maybe Tomlin wants to see if he can build a great team with mainly just the draft.
I'd like to see some new, veteran blood of decent quality, though.

What's our cap situation this year? How close are we to the cap, how many of our veterans do we have to sign and what are the potential free agents looking at salary wise? I'm all for adding experienced vets, as long as the price is right.

Re: Free agents STILL worth looking at (and Pgh won't bother)
I have seen Pgh, over the year, bring in same name guys but almost NEVER sign them. It seems they do this to feign that they are indeed doing more than sitting on their hands when it comes to FA, but in reality, they do mostly sit on their hands. Signing free agents means having to pay signing bonus $, $ that comes right out of Rooney's bank account.
As far as wanting to see if they can repeat with the same guys, that is a serious loser mentality. A team that wants to really cash in and win multiple titles never sits and just approaches the next season without trying to improve. Sure, a stacked team is hard to improve, but this is not a stacked team. This isn't the 1992 Dallas Cowboys. There is room for improvement (huge room) on the OL, at CB (especially with B Mac leaving without Pgh even trying to sign him) and at DL (could use fresh blood at DE) and at WR. _IF_ Sweed comes to life, WR is good.
And, let's look at the Pats. After they win a ring, they still remain aggressive in adding talent every year. I mean, this is a team that added Dillon _after_ they won a ring. And added a Randy Moss. (Not advocating that Pgh signed Moss, only saying, teams wanting to KEEP winning rings don't stand pat.) Now I realize we have won 2 recently to their 3 - only lagging behind by 1 ring, but that does NOT refute the point that if you want to win multiple rings, always look to improve you club any way you can. If Pgh doesn't get aggressive, the window for more rings will close.
And I am NOT advocating to turn into moron Danny Snyder - just to not sit on their asses and improve this team with wise, high value, low cost moves. If the Pats were in this same position, no way would they sign zero FAs.
"We aren't the Pats" you say? Well, we may also watch them add rings to their collection while we sign our below average free agents of our own.

Re: Free agents STILL worth looking at (and Pgh won't bother)
I don't think this has much relevance to Rooney's perceived cheap nature. The signing bonus is still applied to the cap, just prorated by the length of the contract and GUARANTEED. We are not in a situation where we need to take that risk.
I think our cap situation is less than favorable, as well. We have around 10 million, I believe, but we still need to resign Harrison and our draft picks. I, personally, don't like any free agents on the market for our team (and the price) at the moment. I back the decision to draft BPA then fill holes with a short term, low investment veteran contract.
And to address the Pats signing of Dillon and Moss, they are a different team. We are similar in that we build from the draft, but they sign more free agents (and let theirs walk) and we resign our own. Look at some of their core Free Agent pickups. Welker, Moss, Vrabel, Harrison, Dillon, Law. We simply do not use free agency like they do. They use it to build star to core players, where we use it to find core to role players. Who knows what is best, but at least we seem to have a system.

I don't buy all that. Well, I view it as a half truth. There is some truth to saying Pgh builds more from the draft compared NE building _more_ (than Pgh) with FA. However, NE has drafted lots of good players (Brady, Seymore, Wilfolk, entire OL, etc.) but I find what they do, over all, is apply more effort to personnel than does Pgh. It's easy to just sign some of your own players (choosing to often only signing the cheaper ones and letting players like McFadden walk while signing the Colons of the world) and not working the cap and adding some key FAs. Ever since the cap era begun, Pgh has chose to rarely try to get creative with the cap to find space, b/c doing so would mean the Rooneys would have to fork out more $. They prefer to point to the cap, shrug their shoulders, and close the office door and take a nap.

Re: Free agents STILL worth looking at (and Pgh won't bother)
Stillers still trying to come up w/ the cash to sigh Silverback. They should look at WR depth w/ releasing of R.Williams, etc as well as DB & DL depth. I believe there'll be a really good CB on the board when they pick (Alph Smith, etc) & they should go that route. Colbert needs to stop taking kudos for his 1st rd moves & start adding players in later rds that eventually contribute.
