Steelers re-sign Andre Frazier to 2 year deal

Postby thesteelhammer » Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:49 pm

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed unrestricted free-agent LB Andre Frazier to a two-year deal worth $1.375 million. He will receive a $125,000 signing bonus.

This is what the front office is busy with? :?

I was worried about the FO not having worked out a deal with Harrison. Now I'm really worried.

We let McFadden go and haven't worked out anything with Harrison yet, but the front office took the time to resign Willie Colon, Max Starks and Andre Frazier, GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sucks. Silverback is only the LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE DEFENSIVE PLAYER. Why make him a priority?

Pay the man. Stop being cheap and kunty

There's no big rush to sign Harrison because we have him locked for two years: he's under contract for next season and the following season would be franchised.

It may not be very easy to sign him. To preface this I thought signing Farrior to a long term contract was a mistake. Depending on what Harrison and his agent are asking for, the Steelers aren't going to pay a 30+ LB franchise type money. Never have and never will. Farrior looked to be overpaid, but not so much they would be too vested to cut him (see Kendoll). As much as everyone including me think of Harrison, paying top dollar past 4-5 years would be a mistake. I would like to see Silverback finish his career a Steeler, but It has to be at a reasonable price.

Harrison's play last season values him at a franchise level ... at least for one year.

If the Stillers don't sign him to a new contract before 2009 training camp, he will probably play like a mad man again in 2009 to earn his $ payoff in 2010 as a free agent.

But, if I am Rooney I then franchise him for 2010 and reward him for a year with some dollars.

Then I let him test the free agent waters in 2011, because he will be about 33-34 years old by then and I don't want to shell out cash in a big way for him.

I like your thinking. He's worth a lot for the next few years at least. We usually don't pay huge dollars for 30+ year olds, but if you could manage him for a couple of years and see where it takes us.... Or if we could pay him well for 4-5 years at a solid but not cap breaking number it would probably be good for both parties. The cap is probably going to go down, The NBA is already predicting theirs will go down.

A deal for Frazier and a deal for Harrison are two totally different beasts.

A deal for Harrison will be 5-7 yrs and huge money. Harrisons deal is also complicated by 2010 possibly being a uncapped year which throws a lot of rules and restrictions on salary increases that makes it tough for both agents, and teams.

Frazier on the other head is a role player. This deal was probably worked out in 2 hrs over lunch. 2yrs close to min for a player with his experience and a small signing bonus. Plus the Steelers waited to sign him to make sure other teams were not interested.

All true, but what signal and message is it sending? Be the baddest mo fo on earth, make one of THE plays that brought us a ring and we will take our time getting you what your worth. There can't be a more extreme case of a player out-performing what he is getting paid. I'm not freaking out yet but I'd simply look and see what the highest paid LB is making and pay him a little more than that. End of story.

Message: If you mainly want to win, play for the Stillers; if you just want to get paid, play elsewhere.

It's not that black and white. Ben got paid. Troy got paid. Hines got paid. Steelers like to throw around words like "family" and "loyalty." If they don't give Silverback any more $ than he is scheduled to make right now, that is hardly fair or right. It's quite possible (likely) they don't get to or win the SB without this man. Reward him.
