Steelers to draft CB in round 1?

Postby thesteelhammer » Tue Mar 10, 2009 9:12 pm

Mike Bires, of the Beaver County Times, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers may be interested in selecting Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith with their first-round draft choice.

My opinion is that we usually get some false names leaked before the draft, and that this is likely one of this years.

I see either a DL, OL, or CB being taken with the first round pick. Plus we could see a WR with 3-4rnd.

Typically the Steelers taken the best available based on need and they do not stretch just to fill a need especially in the first two rounds. Take last year I would have bet the house that RB, WR would not be out first two picks. However, they did get probably took the best available.

I know a lot will say we should have taken OL and we can always argue the point. However, our track record with 1st and 2nd rnd picks has been pretty good the past 8-10 years.

I wouldn't mind ASmith (from WFU, so we know he can read and write), he is a ballhawk but
is 5'9". Darius Butler (UConn) was another name I saw. I'd rather get OL/DL help at 1.32 and grab Asher Allen (UGa) in R2.

I still think we should go O-line. Protecting Ben has to be our number 1 priority. It seems that the Rooney's, who have about $100 million invested in Ben, would be of the same mindset after watching Ben get slammed to the turf so much last year.

I would like to see a top notch o-line man. Especially since one at the end of rnd 1 will not break the bank.
If not I would go CB.

In the 3-4 system you don't need to have the sexy lineman. The top lineman out of college typically are the guys with 15 sacks and that just won't happen with our scheme. I think we can find good talent for the line with later picks. Aaron Smith and a mid rnd pick I believe and Kiesel was 6-7th rnd pick.

I like what I hear about Mack from Oregon and his versatility.

Hags: Mack played at Cal, Max Unger is the OL prospect from Oregon.

It may be hard for Philadelphia to pass on a player like Smith. Secondary guys who can make plays are part of the Eagles defensive identity. Smith could be considered undersized a bit to most teams, but in their defensive backfield Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard have excelled for a handful of seasons together. Neither of those guys tops 5'10. Sheppard has now been traded to the Jets. The Eagles extended Joselio Hanson this off-season, but could be looking to add a starting caliber backup. I can remember how they like to stockpile defensive lineman, may do the same with Cb. Smith will probably be off the board at #32. With the departure of Cris Carr, Tennessee could have some interest in Alphonso.

Except with Troy Edwards. That was a need pick and a huge reach.
