#1 defense is 7-1 in Super Bowl play
I checked the stats all the way back to the 1970 merger. In the 38 seasons since then, the team with the #1 defense, in terms of yards per game during the regular season that year, has made it to the Super Bowl 8 times, winning 7 of them. The only loss was the 1982 Miami Dolphins losing to the Redskins.

That's quite an encouraging stat.
Also, I've been thinking about it and everyone wants to bring up last year's SB as proof that "anything can happen in the NFL" (i.e., little old Giants beating up on Patsies Goliath should be inspirational to the Cardinals), but I think that everyone is focusing on the wrong storyline from last year's game.
A very good defense stifles a very good offense. An offense that has struggled at times during the year comes together with just enough against a middling defense in order capture the Super Bowl title. I think that is the more relevant story from last year's game, personally.

Another thing is the the Pats of last year were 16-0 undefeated in the regular season which was a story that shadowed them all year. Going into that last game against the Giants the pressure had to be extra enormous to maintain the perfect season.
The 7-1 stat you dug up is encouraging.
