Re: Steeler fans are everywhere!
Nice article...comes down to Steeler fans are everywhere because there are no jobs in Pittsburgh. We all know that. Sure the fans travel but do enough travel to fill half a stadium? No. There isn't a major city in this country without a large population of transplant Pittsburgh people. In college, they tell you to follow your dream..that need to amend that to say Follow your dream so long as it in Pittsburgh. McLovin added to the huge Pittsburgh population here in the ghetto melting pot that is Atlanta and dreams of returning to the great Pittsburgh North someday soon...oh wait back to that minor detail of getting a job
Re: Steeler fans are everywhere!
McLovin you are right about the Pittsburgh diaspora leaving a lot of ex-burghers around the country. My dad was one of them, we moved from the 'burgh when I was little. At one point I even lived two blocks from the Bengals training camp, but my dad taught me right and I never turned away from being a Stiller fan. I'm now living in New England. There are lots of 'burghers here, but there is another kind of Stiller fan - ones who aren't from the 'burgh. I've met them all over the country, too.
A lot of them started liking the team in the 70's; lets face it, in addition to being great teams there was a lot of charisma to those players. But the bigger thing I've found is that the consistency to the team, the lack of ego in the players, and the way you feel part of a club when you're a fan attracts a lot of people. I ask native-born newenglanders why they are stiller fans and alot of comes down the Patriots having crappy ownership and management until this decade. How'd you like to have been a Balt fan when the Colts left town, or an oiler fan, or any of the other clubs that moved or are perenially crappy. Look at all the clubs that never win and then ditch a coach when he can't turn a team around in two years. You couldn't take your kids to the old Sullivan stadium up here, your kids would hear all kinds of bad language and get beer thrown on them. Imagine what the Stillers would be like if they had the Pirates ownership, there would be no Steeler nation.
Maybe the Rooneys can be a bit tight at times, but overall, even when the team isn't winning you can still be proud of them and the way they act. It's amazing to me how many pro teams you can't say that about. We're lucky we've had such consistency, and good management, out of the ownership. There are a lot of people around the country who aren't as lucky and they latch onto the Steelers - it's all good for us.
