Re: Pop Rockers Steeler Song
I got a chuckle because when Pat Benatar's 'Heartbreaker' was a hit the first time round I did a cover of it in a talent show in 7th grade.....I had a Hondo II Les Paul-shaped guitar that was tail-heavy in the extreme and featured woodworking and details similar in quality to the Pinewood Derby car a blind Cub Scout might have created. I got lucky enough to borrow a Conn (yes the orchestral instrument company) guitar shaped like a Stratocaster. Although it was a very short step up in quality I was over the moon at how good it felt (which I why I have several real Strats now!)
Anyway, watching these kids do that particular song brought back a lot of memories and I freely admit the Pop Rocks do it loads better than we ever did. Somehow they work the violin into the arrangement successfully and it's a great idea to have the drummer use one of those Roland electronic kits - much smaller and easier to negotiate for a young player. The arrangement sounds great and the vocalist is strong and doesn't need any processing to sound good (unlike Britney, Shania et al).
The father of two of the musicians is a guitar/drum teacher and produces/manages the group - well done to him. It will be a whirlwind week for them - I'm not even sure they realize how popular they will become with the Nation's demand for all things Steelers. I think they got a taste of it at the South Side pep rally where they performed live - it takes guts to do any show at age 11-13 especially in front of a loud, crazed audience. In interviews the kids are remarkably composed and well-spoken so credit to their managers/teachers/parents. I don't think there's any doubt they will be featured on ESPN, NFL Network and probably the news networks as the SB hype starts up in earnest next week on a national basis.
