Holmes Fumble (or.. touchdown?)

Postby fillstorer » Wed Jan 21, 2009 4:41 pm

I really wish they nfl.com would post an official review on this call.

a few questions.

1.) Can someone explain why this is not a touchdown? I understand that a receiver must hold onto the ball all the way through the catch. But isn't the catch established once a receiver establishes possession and then starts running? Clearly Holmes caught the ball firmly, took two steps and then another step of sorts with is hand.

2.) If for some -- letter of the law -- reason, the official ruled this play correctly, should the rule be changed or clarified? I understand that a receiver has to be thought of us as holding onto the ball "all the way" through the catch... this makes sense and it also helps avoid some of the less helpful previous rules such as "football move". But, in the new rule, shouldn't "the catch" be defined as having been established at some point? For instance, how many more steps would he have had to taken to establish possession? a half? 1? 2?
