Which Ben shows up in the playoffs?

Postby SteelBeach » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:29 pm

I'm thinking the concussion means nothing, he gets rest, and comes out firing on all cylinders. If that Ben shows up, we go all the way. :sufootballhelmet:

Which Ben shows up will depend on which OL shows up. With effective blocking to establish the run game and protection for Ben so he can attack the "D" with a mix of passes, he'll be an efficient game manager. But if the run keeps getting stuffed and Ben is forced to play the role of Superman, with pass rushers breathing down his neck, he'll be a turnover machine (not just INTs, but also sack/fumbles).......

I too have faith in Ben. In the past he has not come back well from injuries. However, there was always a caveat. Either several games off in 2005 to being rushed back too quickly a couple of years ago.

I think he will do fine.

We will go as far as our offense carries us since the D will always be tough. The lack of offense against NE, Dallas, Balt and Tenn did not bother me so much since those teams all have top 5 defenses. However, the sluggish first half against Cleveland was a surprise to me.

I don't know

I have said for 2 years now that Ben + this OLINE + ARIANS = DISASTER

Ben has a lot of pics in the playoffs - seems to tighten up

Too many pics = SD win next week.

Stilldodger, i guess we know which Ben will show up then, because we certainly know which O-line will show up. The O-line that cannot open any holes up in the running game, cannot pass protect and usually commits 3-4 holding and false start penalties a game.

A healthy Ben is capable of playing through a poor OL like only a few QBs in history can...... But he ain't healthy...... A concussion could really mess up a QB, so unlike normal circumstances, I think the OL play will be a major key to this game......

Now if Ben somehow overcomes both a concussion and poor OL play, we'll anoint him MVP..... But the next game.......

The Bigger question is how quick should Tomlin's hook be if Ben plays bad?

Am I remembering correctly? When we selected Ben in the draft was Rivers still available? I think he was. Interesting that the two are now gonna face each other in the playoffs. Rivers was brought along more slowly and methodically while Ben was more or less tossed into the foray. Phil is not the athlete that Ben is but I think that he has had better development.

incorrect - Ben was take #11 overall, Rivers and Manning went 1 and 4.

It will depend on how Ben comes off of the injury.

The SD defense is weak. Something like 23rd over all and lower than that against the pass. The first game was close but:

We had 13 penalties
Heath Miller did not play
Parker was in his first or second game back.

This game will not be a cake walk by any stretch but I like our chances.

Thanks for the correction. I didn't remember that Rivers went number 4. I was giving him credit for panning out higher than his draft position, but now I think he's about par.

what I will add is that I think Rivers and Manning have BY FAR had better (much better) offensive lines. There is not one player on our line that would start on either SD's or NY's.

Faneca would have and maybe Hartings in 2004, '05, but that is it

You have to believe that his motorcycle accident left him susceptible to future concussions. If the offensive line isn't improved, Ben's career could be cut far short of what it should be.
