Hard
Hat Award (Super Bowl, vs. Packers)
No one is the winner of the weekly Hard Hat Award,
given to the Stiller player who best embodies the
iron-tough, hard-as-steel attitude of the steel workers inside the blast
furnace of a still mill.
In a game that was readily there for the taking, no one on
the entire team stepped forward with the kind of hard-hitting, game-changing
play that is expect of this august committee.
As is typical in a losing effort -- especially in a beating
like this one -- very few Stillers were even in consideration by The Committee. Randle El showed some terrific gusto and
enthusiasm -- which was all too lacking across the entire rest of the roster --
with 2 superb catches and a strong run to the pylon for a 2-pointer. Miller had good blocking at the POA. That was about it. Most everyone else was error prone, feeble,
tentative, and soft. Of course, the
coaching staff did nothing to promulgate a Hard
Hat effort, playing a sit-back defense that rarely harassed the QB and even
less rarely punished receivers and ballcarriers.
Most every other player mimicked the defensive coordinator
and played a yellow, callow, chickenshit brand of football. It bears repeating that there is almost
always -- if not always -- a strong correlation between the number of players
in consideration for the Hard Hat,
and if the team won or lost. Simply put,
Hard Hat kind of football leads to
victory; pansy football (a term used here long before Troy Pola popularized it)
leads to defeat.
Kudos to no one for winning the Hard Hat Award. Dont wear the Hard Hat proudly, fellas.
