Hard
Hat Award (Game #14, vs. Trippers)
No one is the winner of the weekly Hard Hat Award,
given to the Stiller player who best embodies the
iron-tough, hard-as-steel attitude of the steel workers inside the blast
furnace of a still mill.
In a game that was there for the taking against a stumbling
Trippers (Jets) team, the Stillers pissed away what should have been a W with
slackly, lackluster play from the very start of the game. On the opening KO, the coverage team allowed
a hole wide enough to fit a semi-trailer....sideways,
giving up the easy TD. From there, is was one thing after another....grabass
football, defenders getting trucked, offensive players flubbing plays, and so
on.
There were only a couple players in consideration by The Committee. Mendenhall ground out 100 yards on only 17
carries, with some strong north-south running.
Wally chipped in with good RAC work and a solid block on a run. Ike had solid coverage all game long. But it wasnt nearly enough to sway The Committee.
As is typical in a losing effort, no other Stillers were
even in consideration by The Committee. Its a rather sad situation when so few
players gave the kind of effort expected for the Hard Hat against a
conference rival. The defense was soft
n cheesy, the offense played grabass the entire game;
and the spec teams were a total pile of vomit.
It bears repeating that there is almost always -- if not always -- a
strong correlation between the number of players in consideration for the Hard Hat, and if the team won or
lost. Simply put, Hard Hat kind of football leads to victory; pansy football (a term
used here long before Troy Pola popularized it) leads to defeat.
Kudos to no one for winning the Hard Hat Award. Dont wear the Hard Hat proudly, fellas.
