Stillers-Clowns Postgame Analysis and Grades

The Stillers hosted the hapless 2-7 Browns.   Most of the 1H resembled your typical Tomlin egg-lay, with overt slop, lethargy, and complete lack of focus reigning supreme.   With an extreme help from Clev’s constant ineptitude, the Stillers opened up a comfy lead, and cruised in the 4Q to a 30-9 win.

Grades:

QB:

Jones – Got his 2nd start of the season.  Had his foot/ankle stomped on by Fat Marcus Gilbert, 2nd series, and limped to the bench.   He can thank FatAss Marcus.    Inc

Ben – came on in relief of Laundry Jones.   Went 18 of 23 for 286 yards in the 1H, despite missing a couple early series.  Shoddy pass that was nearly INTd, early 4Q.   The next play, his high crosser sailed over Heath’s hands and was picked off.  Not sure if by design, but Ben harnessed his inner Darryl Lamonica, going deep at least 10 times this game.   Frankly, Ben threw a much, much better deep ball with the bad foot, than he does when healthy.  Go figure.    A+

RB:

DeAngelo – good RAC on a screen pass, late 2Q.   In the 2H, stupidly failed to switch the ball to his OUTSIDE hand, and was stripped at the CLEV 4-yard line.  Luckily, Miller recovered.    Piled on some yards in garbage time when Clev basically had given up.   Had 17 rushes for 54 yards.     B-

Todman – saw only token duty in garbage time.

FB:

Will Johnson – played very little, if at all.   .

Nix – good grab and run, 1st play of game.

WR:

Brownie – sterling RAC, 1Q,getting 16 on a 3d & 15 short crosser.  Took a short slant and took it to the house, 4Q, culminating in a summersault as he hit the goal line !     10 grabs, 139.   A+

Pinkie Wheaton –  Had his usual, piddly contribution of 2 grabs, 18 yards.    C

Bryant -  Caught a deep ball, 1Q, good for 45 yards.  Made a finger-tip grab of a deep ball, 2Q, but then coughed up the ball upon being stripped about 8 steps later.   Very soft, and very poor.   Made a “hoop catch”, in which the deep ball went right thru his hands and arms, 2Q.   Luckily, there was a flag for PI.  Grabbed a deep lob for a TD, late 2Q.  6 grabs, 178.   A-

Heyward-Gay – did nothing.

TE:

Miller – had 4 grabs for 40.   Run blocking was marginal.     B

Spaeth – thankfully did not dress.  If he never dresses for the Stillers again, I’ll be the happiest Stiller fan on Earth.

James – played in placed of Spaeth.   Had 1 grab for 2 yards.     B

OL:  Overall, the run blocking sucked ass.   In the 1H, Williams had 7 carries for 3 yards.   In the 3Q and early 4Q, it wasn’t much better.   Only when Clev had mailed it in during garbage time, did these softee slackers open any holes.   Overall, their grade is:   D

Villenueva -  adequate game.   Still has issues reading who he should block, but that should improve with more PT.   Flagged for a false start.

Gilbert -  FatAss Marcus stomped on Laundry Jones’ foot/ankle while getting mauled, forcing Jones from the game quite early.  Later in the 1Q, on a key 3d & 2 at the CLEV16, FatFuk Marcus just stood there, not blocking or engaging ANYBODY.    The LB directly in front of him easily batted the designed quick-out pass.    C-

Foster –  Flagged for a false start.  Blocked sub-par, esp. in the ground game.

Cody Wallace –  Flagged for a hold on a rare positive run (6 yards) by D. Williams.     Got savagely eaten alive the entire game.   Played like manure.    D-

DeCastro – solid game, but hardly stellar.

DL:

Cam Thomas – Played little.   Waddled his fat ass to and fro.    Wish he would have sat.

McLendon -  engulfed a running play, 12:00 2Q, for a rare solo stop.

Heyward – blew up a draw play, late 2Q, in which he completely forklifted the OG backwards and onto his ass and then engulfed the RB.   Got a Dong Sack, 3Q, when Manziel found no one open after about 9 seconds.

Tuitt – applied some good pressure several times, and had 2 solos.

McCullers – saw some PT.  Blasted Duke J. at the end of a screen play, 3Q.

LB:

Timmons – made a fortuitous, ankle-nip stop of Duke Johnson on a 3d & 11 screen pass, last play of 1Q.   A fairly shoddy play on what should have been a routine stop of a 3-yard gain.  Had 7 solos and 3 A.   Is becoming more and more a liability in pass coverage.

Shaquier – feebly whiffed on Benjamin, 2nd series.   Tooled by Barnage, 2Q, for a 17 yard gainer.  Credited for a solo stop on a weak-assed, clumsy-fuk tackle of Manziel on a scrambled, 3Q.   Shoved aside The Duke Boy and sacked Manziel late in the 3Q…his first quality play since, oh, the 49er game.  Had 5 solos and 1 A in a mediocre effort.   Ain’t played even 30% as good as he did on that one golden game vs. SF.    C

Spence –  Thankfully saw little PT.

Moats – grabbed Johnny Boy’s careless fumble, first Clev play from scrimmage.   Then, later in the 1Q, he got his money’s worth on a facemask penalty, turning Johnny Boy into Johnny Owl !   Lmao !!   Twisted the punk QB’s neck around like some creep on a horror film !!    B

Harrison – did not dress, due to injury.

Jones –  recovered the fumble forced by Allen, late 2Q.  Bullrushed Joe Thomas, early 2Q, which forced a sack.  Stop the presses !!    JarStiff made an NFL-caliber play!!    His 4th of the season !!    Still, not nearly enough impact or production.   C+

Dupree – astutely read the end around and then did a superb job of keeping outside contain, forcing a 7-yard loss.   Outstanding play.  Read and blew up a WR screen, about 4 plays later.   Fooled badly on a PAP boot, 3Q.   Had 2 solos and should be getting more PT.

Chickillo – saw some PT with Harrison out.   Really like this guy’s size and brawn.   Could make non-tendering JarStiff an easy decision for Doltbert.

DB

Will Allen – Clumsily bobbled a lollipop, deflected ball that should have been a cake-easy INT at the Cleve 30 or so.  The next play, Clev completed a 61-yard pass play.  Partially atoned by forcing a fumble, late 2Q.  Got totally tooled and abused by Barnidge on a short fade route for a TD, early 4Q.    C+

Mitchell – appeared to hurt a shoulder on a rather feeble tackle, 2Q.  Missed just 1 play.   Got an INT on a poorly thrown pass across the grain, early 4Q.   Had 5 solos.

Gay  -  good coverage of Benjamin on a deep ball, late 2Q.  Good run support, with 7 solos.   A

Blake –  Surprisingly wasn’t picked on as often as he usually is.

Golden –  came in for Bitchell, 2Q, for 1 play.

Sharko Thomas – never permitted to play on defense in this game.

Boykin – never permitted to play on defense in this game.

Cockrell – saw some nickel PT.

Spec teams:

Jordan Berry – punted only once in an oddity in that regard.

Boswell – missed a PAT in the 4Q, which enraged me despite the blowout.   Was 3 of 3 on FGs.   KO’s were excellent.     B+

Jacoby Jones – muffed a fair catch punt on the 1st play of 2Q.   Luckily, he recovered.  Muffed a simple KO, 4Q, and lucky for him, the ball rolled and hit the pylon; it could have easily rolled OOB at the 1-inch line.   Semi muffed an earlier KO as well.  Not sure what kind of acid this fellow did the nite before, a la Dock Ellis, but he vastly needs to step up his focus, oh, about 700%.      F

AB – did not line up in punt return.

Vinnie W. – good solo tackle in KO cover, 1Q.    Chickillo had a good solo on KO cover.

OC:

Haley had the luxury of facing a decrepit Clev D.

3d & 2, CLEV 6-yard line, late 2Q.   Haley – with a gimpy QB, no less – goes EB (empty backfield).  Ergo, there’s NO ONE to pick up a blitz, and NO ONE to scoot out for a valve dumpoff.   Ben gets sacked (surprise!!) to force a FG.   (Granted, Clev stupidly committed a “leverage jumping” flag on the FG try, which gave the Stillers an unbelievably lucky 2nd chance.)   At any rate, it was a shit design by a complete shithead.

Thanks to a Cleve offsides, the Stillers had TWO chances on 4th down to score a TD from inside the Clev 2, late 2Q.   Both pass plays were sheer vomit, consisting of low probability pass plays.    Complete barf.  After the offisdes flag, Haley got too cute.  He could have called a power run with Deangelo or Nix.

The mad bombing by Ben was a bit of an oddity today…..can’t recall this kind of bombing by Ben….ever.  Not sure if it was ad hoc or by design.     Nice to do it when there’s a feeble pass rush, but not every opponent will be so kind and considerate.    B-

DC:

Keith Assler had a similar luxury, facing a bumbling, inept Clev offense led (sic) by Johnny Boy.

3d & 14, late 1Q…and Assler goes soft, giving the QB eons of time and then allowing an easy 17-yard  pitch n’ catch.    Assler also allowed Clev to crawl back into the game, and only Clev’s continual shooting itself in the foot prevented this game from getting interesting.       Assler actually made Johnny Boy look like a competent NFL QB, allowing the twerp to go 33 of 45 for 372 yards, 1 TD, and only 1 INT, becoming the first NFL coach in the entire NFL to accomplish this feat.   C-  \

HC:  Mike Dumblin oversaw a shoddy, sloppy first 25 minutes.   At home, this was unacceptable.    Up 30-9 with only 1:22  left, the Stillers called a deep ball to AB instead of a plunge, or a kneel.    Classless and clueless, just like Mike Dumlin.   That play enraged me.         B-

Synopsis:  A sloppy win over an inept foe.  We’ll take it, of course, with the wild crad race as tight as it is.    A bye week, and then off to SEA for what will likely be a whipping administered by SEA.  The Hawks are struggling, but one can anticipate this due to Dumblin’s teams most often playing a meek, flaccid brand of football on the road.
