Forget Deflategate, LeGarrette-gate is on the way!

Commentary by PalmerSucks

A reader responding to my last commentary hooked me up with an interesting read, which I thought I’d share with you:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-other-patriots-conspiracy-theory--legarrett-blount-s-scheme-to-reunite-with-bill-belichick-233502306-nfl.html

The article paints a different pic of the situation than the Pittsburgh sports media have: that in fact the whole storm-off-the-field drama happened because the Stillers went back on their promise that Blount would be sharing the load with Bell, not just relieve him. As the writer explains:

“Blount started off with only seven carries in his first two games. And things got worse after a 10-carry, 118-yard rushing effort against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 21. Conventional thought was that Blount would carry a greater load after that game. Instead, he followed it up with four carries in a 27-24 loss to a bad Tampa Bay Buccaneers team. From that point on, his role in the Steelers offense was clear: He was a guy who would occasionally spell Bell, and would rarely have a larger role installed for him.”

But that’s just the background info. What the article suggests is nothing less than this: that in fact the Patriots had released Blount last year with the full intent of bringing him back, regardless of whether he was playing for another team or not. That in fact Blount was being docked with another team – a patsy team -- so the Patriots could save some cap room, and fish him back in when the time was right. According to the article:

“…there are those within the NFL community who continue to maintain that Blount's self-induced meltdown and subsequent banishment from Pittsburgh was orchestrated toward a pre-determined end: Get out of Pittsburgh, slide back into New England. Correct a free-agent mistake that never should have been made in the first place.”

I was about to laugh and cue up some X-Files music; but then, reading the comments section, I came upon this little gem from some guy who lives in New England – who, from the sound of it, might even be a Stillers fan.

“I sited (sic) the probability the day he left the field. Earlier that day, on a show here in Massachusetts on Sports Hub Radio, 98.5 fm, Felgar and Maz brought the suggestion that Belichick is "cheapening the running back position", in releasing sitting Grey out 1 week as well as having released Legarrette Blount...Then, the radio personality stated, this NOTION: The Steelers are getting ready to let Blount go.
I thought, "How would they know The Steelers are going to let Blount go?"
That night, against The Titans, The Steelers sat Blount out. Blount left the stadium. No NFL player would do that to his career if he had not already secured it. Blount brokered his postion (sic) prior to his release. In fact, this may be something Belicheat dreamed of when waiving Blount. To dominate the running game, he released Blount's nasty #$%$ in order to open the running back slot, with Blount knowing he would be brought back.
Blount ran for no yards during his game with the Jets. He also fumbled the ball inside the 10 yard line. He missed assignments and dropped passes.”

What he says fits in perfectly with the article’s premise. It even goes one step further, suggesting that in fact, far from releasing Blount BECAUSE he walked off the field, the Stillers had actually planned on releasing him all along, perhaps even aggravating Blount on purpose in order to create an excuse for cutting him.

The article mentions how Blount kept in touch constantly with his ex-teammates while playing for the Stillers. Is it possible he also kept in touch with his ex-Coach? And if so, did the two cook something up, using the Stillers as their unwitting dupes, fully aware of how to use their knee-jerk holier-than-thou, sacrificial-lamb mentality against them? Did young Skywalker, under the guidance of Darth Belichick, actually push the Stillers to cut him? If that’s remotely the case, then I only have one thing to say:

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because if there’s any – and I mean any – chance that this is what actually went down, then the men who run the Stillers are even bigger schlubs that I thought. How appropriate this article ran on Yahoo – because that’s what we’re dealing with here! Once again, whether under Cowher or Tomlin, the Stillers are schooled and tooled by the dark Lord Belichick.

All hilarity aside however, there’s a point to be made. I’m no expert on the NFL’s tampering rules, but I’ve got to think this falls somewhere underneath them – again, if there’s any truth to this.

Maybe instead of spending so much time thinking about Tom Brady’s balls, the Commissioner ought to be asking Brady’s teammate about his relationship with Belichick. Both when he was a Patriot and when he was a Stiller. It might turn out to be a fascinating conversation.

Blount-gate? LeGarrette-gate? Whatever you want to call it, it sure sounds a little shady. And certainly a bit more serious than what some ballboy might have been doing in the bathroom.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to the guy who brought this to my attention. True or not, this thing made my day!
