Power Rankings (week 1)

September 14, 2016 by Steel Haven

Rnk LW* Team Record Comments
1. 5. New England Patriots 1-0 No Brady or Gronkowski, no problem. Already alone in first in the AFC East with the rest of the division losing.
2. 1. Seattle Seahawks 1-0 Wilson engineered the 19th game winning fourth quarter drive of his career despite playing with an ankle sprain.
3. 4. Green Bay Packers 1-0 Nelson lacked explosiveness in his return from a torn ACL averaging 5.3 yards per catch on 6 receptions with a long of only 8 yards. He did get into the endzone.
4. 6. Pittsburgh Steelers 1-0 Roethlisberger moved past Monongahela native Montana, tied Testervede for 12th all time in regular season TD passes with 275.
5. 7. Denver Broncos 1-0 Siemian showed tremendous poise in prime time in his first start. Hard to envision lack of arm strength not being exploited by opponents as season progresses.
6. 8. Cincinnati Bengals 1-0 Dalton came through late despite being battered by the Jets stellar defensive line.
7. 2. Carolina Panthers 0-1 Much like the Super Bowl the offensive line simply could not contain the Broncos defensive front 7, especially later in the game.
8. 3. Arizona Cardinals 0-1 Got off to an inexcusable slow start against Garoppolo led Pats, allowed late FG to lose after coming all the way back.
9. 9. Kansas City Chiefs 1-0 Smith showed he could leave his comfort zone, open up the offense when needed.
10. 10. Houston Texans 1-0 Osweiler provides stability at QB, something the franchise hasn't had except for Schaub in his best couple of years.
11. 11. Minnesota Vikings 1-0 Survived in Tennessee with Hill under center thanks to a pair of defensive scores.
12. 14. Oakland Raiders 1-0 Del Rio showed enormous cojones eschewing the tie and going for 2 for the win after scoring a TD in the final minute.
13. 15. New York Giants 1-0 Improved defensive line, secondary made a stop on the final drive which would have been unheard of last season.
14. 17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1-0 Winston poised for a breakout season.
15. 12. New York Jets 0-1 A loss in Buffalo on a short work week could have them staring at an 0-6 start given the brutal 4 game stretch up next on the schedule (@KC, Seattle, @Pittsburgh, @Arizona).
16. 18. Baltimore Ravens 1-0 Flacco passing to an improved corps of receivers makes them dangerous.
17. 26. Detriot Lions 1-0 Stafford looked good spreading the ball around in the absence of retired Megatron.
18. 13. Indianapolis Colts 0-1 Luck is back with 385 yards passing, 4 TDs and no interceptions. Alas offensive line, running game and defense all again look abysmal.
19. 16. Washington Redskins 0-1 Lost their fourth straight season opener, have won only 5 of their last 25 prime time regular season games.
20. 19. Jacksonville Jaguars 0-1 Kept the game close against Packers. Is that enough at home given rising expectations?
21. 30. Philadelphia Eagles 1-0 Gamble on seemingly unflappable, poised Wentz a success so far.
22. 20. Dallas Cowboys 0-1 Prescott was fine between the 20s, had trouble getting the ball into the endzone. Bryant did him no favors having what seemed liked a sure TD overturned on review when he failed to secure a well thrown ball against tough coverage.
23. 24. Miami Dolphins 0-1 Didn't get a break from the schedule makers opening the season in Seattle and Foxboro.
24. 21. Buffalo Bills 0-1 Ryan brothers already on the hot seat. Rex looks like a strong possibility to be the first head coach fired this season.
25. 22. New Orleans Saints 0-1 Brees exploded for 423 passing yards with Snead accounting for 172 receiving yards. Wasn't enough thanks to atrocious defense.
26. 23. Atlanta Falcons 0-1 Losers of 9 of their last 12 after starting out last season by winning 5 straight.
27. 27. Chicago Bears 0-1 Should have tried harder to replace uninspiring Cutler in the off season.
28. 31. San Francisco 49ers 1-0 Face a slight upgrade in opposing QB play this coming week with Newton under center instead of Keenum.
29. 25. St. Louis Rams 0-1 Set football back decades with performance in Santa Clara on Monday night.
30. 28. San Diego Chargers 0-1 Blew a 17 point fourth quarter lead. Adding injury to insult lost Rivers' top weapon Allen for the season.
31. 29. Tennessee Titans 0-1 Conservative offensive style means they need to protect the ball, certainly can't afford to give up a pair of defensive TDs like they did against the Vikes.
32. 32. Cleveland Browns 0-1 Traded the pick used to take Wentz because they didn't think he was a franchise QB. Decision took all of 1 game to come back to haunt them on multiple levels. Wentz beat them in his first pro game, start. RGIII already likely out for the season with a shoulder injury.
