Haven's NFL Power Rankings (Week 1)

Rnk LW Team Record Comments
1. 1. Pittsburgh Steelers 1-0 The 0-4 preseason proved meaningless. Batch connected on 3 touchdowns to 3 different receivers in relief of Roethlisberger. Parker ground out the tough yards with Bettis in the broadcast booth. The attacking defense befuddled Culpepper and stuffed Brown. The current regular season/playoff winning streak is at 9 games.
2. 2. Indianapolis Colts 1-0 Didn't get much from Rhodes and Addai. Didn't matter.
3. 7. Cincinnati Bengals 1-0 Defense and the running game led the way to victory in Arrowhead. Could be a statement game from a team known last year primarily for their high flying aerial circus.
4. 4. Seattle Seahawks 1-0 Letting Hutchinson walk as a free agent had the expected negative affect. Signing Burleson to get back at the Vikings worked out so poorly that a first rounder was just traded to the Patiots for Branch.
5. 9. Jacksonville Jaguars 1-0 Off to a good start in trying to prove that last season's 12 wins were not a fluke.
6. 6. New England Patriots 1-0 Tough team to read. Struggling against the Bills is not a good sign. Brady clearly missed Branch and Givens. Track record says they can't be written off.
7. 5. Denver Broncos 0-1 Went on the road last year in week 1 and got surprisingly blown out by Miami. Then won 13 of their next 15. A repeat is not out of the question. Plummer has his problems. Especially under pressure. Most days though he will be significantly better than Sunday in St. Louis.
8. 13. Philadelphia Eagles 1-0 Alone a top the NFC East. Stallworth made Owens an afterthought. At least for a week.
9. 15. Chicago Bears 1-0 Grossman provided some offense to go along with the dominating defense. How good are the Bears? Hard to tell against the struggling Packers.
10. 17. Atlanta Falcons 1-0 Got the ground game going and rolled over the Panthers. All the news wasn't good. Newly acquired Abraham limped off with a groin injury after dominated on defense.
11. 20. Baltimore Ravens 1-0 National columnists and commentators can't get on the bandwagon fast enough. The win in Tampa was impressive. Forgive me for wanting to see repeat performances in the next couple of weeks before moving them into the top 5.
12. 14. San Diego Chargers 1-0 Rivers didn't make mistakes within the confines of a very conservative offensive gameplan allowing Tomlinson and the defense to win the game. How well that works against a better opponent is an open question.
13. 11. New York Giants 0-1 Eli's accuracy in the short to medium range passing game remains an issue. Losing to the Colts is not a disgrace. A win would have definitely lessened the pressure of a brutal early season schedule. Could realistically be 0-3 after trips to Philadelphia and Seattle.
14. 3. Carolina Panthers 0-1 Lost a home game to a divisional foe and looked bad in the process. Not the same team when Smith can't play.
15. 8. Miami Dolphins 0-1 Welker was a revelation. Culpepper was not. Whether it was just rust or Culpepper reverting to the form he showed at the beginning of last season will determine how far this team can go.
16. 10. Dallas Cowboys 0-1 Sometimes Bledsoe makes mistakes and loses a game. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Parcells needs to decide whether to roll the dice with Romo or accept Bledsoe's flaws.
17. 19. Minnesota Vikings 1-0 An impressive road win is always a good way to start the season. Stellar line play on both sides of the ball could take this team farther than most expected.
18. 21. Arizona Cardinals 1-0 Won a game they had to win as the offense managed to outscore the undermanned 49ers. Real test comes next Sunday in Seattle.
19. 22. St. Louis Rams 1-0 Biggest surprise of the week. Haslett's defense pressured Plummer into mistakes. Jackson controlled the game on the ground despite failing to get into the endzone.
20. 16. Washington Redskins 0-1 Multi-million dollar coordinators did not pay off in week 1. Didn't seem confortable yet with Saunders' offense. Williams was forced to play passive defense due to the injury to Springs.
21. 12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 0-1 Simms looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Losing both starting guards to injury before playing the Ravens is never a good sign.
22. 18. Kansas City Chiefs 0-1 Crumbling offensive line surrendered 7 sacks. Green is expected to be out until at least October 8th with a severe concussion. Needless to say the Edwards era did not start out on a high note.
23. 23. Detriot Lions 0-1 Marinelli's presence was felt with tough defense and disciplined play. Martz's presence on the other side of the ball was less of a factor.
24. 29. New Orleans Saints 1-0 Did a good job of getting both McAllister and Bush involved. Trip to Lambeau to take on the reeling Packers could give them 2 road wins to start the season. That would be an amazing accomplishment for Payton and company.
25. 31. New York Jets 1-0 Decision to spend both first rounders on offensive linemen is already paying dividends. Their week 1 opponent the Titans should take note.
26. 27. Buffalo Bills 0-1 Defense hung tough in Foxboro. Losman seemed to have a better grasp until taking a late safety that proved to be the margin of defeat.
27. 24. Tennessee Titans 0-1 Decision to sign Collins a week before the beginning of the regular season and hand him the starting job was confusing to say the least. Collins did not immediately reward the faith shown in him by Reese, Fisher and Chow. What a surprise.
28. 30. Houston Texans 0-1 Deja vu for Carr. The beleagued former first overall pick that had already been sacked a mind numbing 208 times in his 4 year career was brought down behind the line of scrimmage 5 times in the first game with Kubiak at the helm.
29. 32. San Fransisco 49ers 0-1 Fought hard in Arizona. Smith looks like the real deal after a disasterous rookie campaign. Unfortunately the defense is simply not competative.
30. 25. Cleveland Browns 0-1 Losing at home to the Saints is not usually considered a harbinger of good things to come. At least Winslow finally got on the field.
31. 26. Oakland Raiders 0-1 Shutout. Less total net yards (129) than Tomlinson gained rushing (131). Managed only 9 first downs. Brooks was sacked 9 times as Gallery served as more of a turnstile than left tackle. And I stayed up to watch this game in it's entirety. At least I ended up getting shitfaced drinking Maker's Mark bourbon.
32. 28. Green Bay Packers 0-1 An unmitigated disaster. Playing Favre over Rodgers at this point really serves no purpose. Either for Favre or the franchise.
