DeWayne, Porter Co-Win Weekly Hard Hat Award (Game #6, vs. Cinci)
Stiller CB DeWayne Washington and OLB Joey Porter are the co-winners of my weekly Hard Hat Award, given to the Stiller player who best embodies the iron-tough, hard-as-steel attitude of the steel workers inside the blast furnace of a still mill.
DeWayne had 10 solos, an almost unheard of number for a CB, unless the front seven is getting annihilated and the opposing ground game is piling up some 200 yards of rushing, which obviously didn't occur. DeWayne stopped everything in his sight --- receivers catching underneath passes, WR screens, RB sweeps, and so forth. Unlike Lee Flowers, this was textbook tackling that should be must-see for any high school DB wanting to learn how to tackle.
Porter had 3 sacks, one of which produced a fumble and a follow-on FG, and another which produced a safety. Porter also had another adroit strip in the game (which, to date, has only been reported on by one Stillers-related source -- Stillers.com), stripping Cinci RB Bennett with a leaping, tiger-like tackle front behind, but a fortuitous bounce allowed Bennett to retain possession of the ball.
Kudos to DeWayne & Joey for winning the weekly Hard Hat Award. Wear the Hard Hat proudly, men!!
