Stillers 37, Jest 15 ...... Oct 20, 2024 …………Game # 7
Stillers - Jest Postgame Analysis and Grades
The 4-2 Stillers hosted the lowly 2-4 NY Jest on SNF. The Jest were up 15-6, and led 15-13 at the half. The Stillers scored 10 in the 3Q to take a 23-15 lead into the 4Q. In the 4Q, the Stillers scored a TD to put the game away.
Due to the late-nite ending of this game, this’ll be a more succinct report.
Grades:
QB: Big Russell Wilson got the start after sitting and rotting all preseason and the first 6 games.
First pure dropback of the game, bailed out too quickly and scrambled forward for a yard. 1Q – was 2 of 6 passing.
First play 2Q, threw a hideous, off target pass to Austin on a simple WR screen.
Poor deep ball to GP, but GP made the play for a big gainer, 44 yards, 2Q.
Had ALL day, 3d & 10 at the NY 11, but couldn’t find anyone and fired the ball OOB to force a FG.
Hit GP for a short TD, late 2Q. Wilson's first half: 8/17, 145 yards, 1 TD, 96.4 QB rating.
After a sputtering, wheezing 1Q, played solidly. B+
Fields – did not play at’all.
RB:
Harris – scampered around end, 18 yards, 3d play o’ game. Ripped off a 34-yard run to open the 4Q. Scored a late TD on 4th & 2. A-
Warren – good 10-yard run, 3Q. Good RAC to move the sticks, late 3Q. B+
Cord Patterson – did not dress, due to injury.
FB: Conn Hey played some at FB.
WR:
Pickens – hauled in the underthrown deep ball, 2Q, for 44 yards. Unable to haul in a tough deep ball, 5:00 2Q. Snared a short lob TD, late 2Q. Made a juggling grab on a deepish lob, 3Q. A-
Van Jeff – grabbed a short pass, 1:11 2Q, although he turned INSIDE rather than getting to the chalk. Grabbed a short TD pass, early 4Q. B
Austin – 3d & 1, 2nd series, and PeePee drops a very easy, very catchable pass to force the punt. Due to blown coverage, PeePee was WIDE open for a catch n run of 37 yards, 4Q. B-
Rom Wilson – again was inactive. Anyone recall all the fawning over this twerp on draft day AND the 5 months that followed??
TE:
Pat FryBoy – flagged for a hold on a toss sweep, 2Q. Big RAC for a 30 yard gain, 2Q. Good 1-handed grab on 3rd down, 3Q. B-
Darnell – good grab and run, 2nd play of game, off a PAP boot. Snared a PAP boot, 2Q, on a similar play. Grabbed a 1-yard pass, 3Q. Grabbed a 2-yard pass, late 3Q. B+
Con Heyward – not used in the passing game.
OL: Overall, the line (Moore, Seumalo, Ryan McCollum, McCormick, Jones) had an okay game. Decent run blocking, and the pass pro was mostly adequate.
Jones got bullrushed and bullied, 3d & 5 1st series, which forced the throwaway pass. Very poor. Moore allowed pressure on a 3d & 12, late 1Q. Moore was flagged for a hold, 2Q. Jones was abused for a sack a couple plays later. B
Frazier sat out due to the ankle injury last week.
DL:
Heyward – end of 1Q, 0 As, 0 solos. Batted a pass, 13:36 2Q. Finished 1H with 2 solos, 0 A. In the 2H, did jak fuq, with 0 solos, 0 As, and zero nothing. D-
Ogunjobi – Got a semi-earned sack, 1st series. The QB had well over 3 seconds and then Rodgers ate the ball and took the sack. Committed a silly, needless excessive tackle/personal foul, mid 1Q, negating a 2-yard loss. Foolish.
Adams – did little.
Leal – on IR.
Benton – busted up a valve dumpoff, mid 4Q, and then batted a 4th down pass.
LB:
Queen – Took a gimpy, asinine angle on a short dumpoff, mid 1Q, allowing the RB to gain 17 yards. This was a ROUTINE dumpoff that should have gained, at most, 6 yards. (See video at: https://x.com/i/status/1848166167065579740 ) Had ONE solo the entire game. After playing pretty well last week, he plummeted back down to Earth with a very subpar game. D+
Landon Rob – Not much.
Watt – held off the scoresheet, 1H. Batted a pass, 3Q. Finished with 0 solos, 1 A.
Highsmith – returned from his pulled groin.
(11:24 - 1st) (Shotgun) B.Hall left guard to NYJ 24 for 2 yards (P.Queen; A.Highsmith). Had some LIGHT pressure on the pass Scam Heyward batted, early 2Q. Finished the 1H with 0 solos, 3 As. Had some LIGHT pressure (despite all the fawning by the TV crew) on a 3d & 2 pass that Rogers simply misfired, 1st drive of 3Q.
Had 1 solo, 3 A in a drab effort. C-
Herbig – DNP, due to injury.
Pey Wilson – good chasedown tackle of Hall, 3:00 2Q.
DB
Joey Porter Jr. - dropped the RB for a 2-yeard loss, 4Q.
Donte Jackson – whiffed on a solo tackle, 1Q, allowing an extra 10 yards of RAC. Good run support on a wide run, late 1Q, for a 1 yard loss. Did a weakling ONE-armed tackle attempt on RB Breece Hall on a RAC, and of course, WHIFFED, allowing another 30 yards of RAC. A shoit play. (see video at: https://x.com/i/status/1848177021106741356 ) Ended up on the bench; not sure if he got nicked up or if the staff had seen enough. D-
Kazee – did not dress, due to injury.
DeShon Elliot – dropped the RB for a 3 yard loss, mid 1Q. Was all over the field. THIS is what a starting NFL-caliber SS looks like, as opposed to stiffs like Terrell Edmunds. A
Minkah – quiet, but they weren’t victimized by the deep ball.
Bishop – snared an earned INT, late 2Q. Dropped a WR on a 0-step hitch kind of play, for a 4-yard loss. In the 3Q, got a DONG INT in which the pass CLANGED off the WR and Beanie was there to grab the charity. Got tooled by Wilson on a slant and long RAC, for 27 yards, 4Q. B+
Pierre - Got abused on a backshoulder lob, 19 yards, late 2Q. .
Spec teams:
Waitman – punted solidly.
Boswell – booted 46 yard FG, 1Q. Short FG, 2Q. Short FG, 3Q.
Minkah was flagged for leverage on his blocked PAT, 2Q, and as a result of the flag, NY went for two and got it, resulting in a 2-point swing. The glad was tickytack and dubious.
The FG block unit blocked a NY FG, late 3Q. To think, Danny Smith was a laughingstock around the league just a few years ago.
OC: Art Smith had the luxury of facing a Jest defense that was down two of their top three corners tonight. That should have bode well for the passing game. Then, CB Sauce Gardner got injured late in the 2Q, although he came back.
3d & 1, 2nd series, and Smith goes EMPTY backfield, and a pass to PeePee Austin is dropped. The ground game had been producing quite well; why the stupid, brainless empty set ??
The passing game was obviously more prolific tonite. B+
DC: Austin had an okay evening. NY lost its starting OG, 4:30 2Q. I won’t rave and fawn all over Austin after this win, but it was adequate for the defense. B+
HC: Mike Asslin cobbled together a win amid the distraction all week about Russ Wilson, etc. He’ll be the first to crow and preen. Let’s see how they maintain the momentum. B+
Synopsis: A solid win to boost the record to 5-2. I’d hold off making Sup Bowl plans, of course, but it was a solid win and the light is shining pretty well right now on the way ahead. Need to dominate the NYG and then head into a bye week at 7-2.
