STEELERS AT JAX: A HISTORICAL VIEW

Tom Coughlin once said, This isn't a rivalry until the Steelers say it is. There have been some historical Steelers-Jax games though, since the inception of this.series...in 95.

The expansions Jagoffs won the the first game in their own ballyard, jumping to a 14-0 lead, sealing the victory when Idiot ODonnell eschewed a 1st down just steps away and threw incomplete on 4th down.

Steelers won the rematch in the Burgh. 1st game of the Slash era.

Steelers went down to the Jags, in Jax, in the '96 season opener. Greg Lloyd went down with a torn patella tendon, never to be the same. Again, Steelers won the TRS rematch, Carnell Lake taking a fumble back about 90 yards, Yancey catching 2 TDs in a severely abbreviated season for him.

The '97 season brought another loss in Jax on the last second blocked FG where Cowher almost made the tackle on the runback. Steelers won in OT a few weeks later, on a shovel pass from Kordell to The Bus. Was after this game, that some wimp-ass wrote in from Jax...didnt know us Pittsburghers were THAT serious bout our Steelers. Mr. Gee Whiz from Jax had parked his Winnebago on the South Sidenext morning he awoke to 4 slashed tires. Then he goes to the game, has beer poured on him, wife called every type of bitch yinz can think of. In sum, he didnt have a very good time. Guess he should have stayed the fuck home!!

Serve held in '98 with Steelers winning in the Burgh the Monday before Thanksgiving. I watched this game at Slammin Sammies on North Carolinas Outer Banks. Not necessarily a Steeler bar, plenty of games on...two-thirds of viewers were Steeler fans. Steelers, after being eliminated from playoff contention, lost the season finale on a Monday night in Jax.

Serve was broken in '99 with Jax taking both tilts in their 13-3 season. Steelers finally won in Jax in 00, in a game noted for Plaxico's infamous Spike. Steelers lost the rematch at TRS on a Sunday night, as Fred Taylor gained about 1,000 yards in a single game.

No more home and home come the '01 season. Steelers won a very tough match at Heinz the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Of course, I was in PEI, and didn't watch, nor knew the outcome, until my tape arrived from Brother Tony on Thanksgiving Day (just an ordinary work day in Canada).

'02 saw about 5 FGs from Skippy, and a solid game from Kordell in the absence of Tammy, as the Steelers stopped a deuce attempt by the Jags to ice the victory.

And then...in '04, Ben rallied, in one of his first messianic performances, rallied the troops in the final 2 minutes to best the Jagoffs in Jax.

Who can forget last year's contest, absent Ben & Hines, when the winds fucked with Tammy all game, even causing him to fuck up his handoffs, and the Steelers lost in OT.  On this fateful day, Mrs. Swiss pulled her usually routine of coming home around 3:45pm, (she has to know, this is purposeful) in just enough time to see me take a hammer to the game tape in front of a house guest. See in the Archives: Steeler Depression has Set in.from last October.

A few first for me that game:

a. May have been the first time I took a hammer to a game tape.

b. First time I rooted for injury to my own player (Maddox).

c. First time I conspired to murder (Maddox...I would have given him a push off the Smithfield Street Bridge).

d. First time, I predicted (thankfully erroneously) that Cowher would never win the SB.

Was quite upset that day.

Monday's game:

Ben will fuckin play. Remember last year, coming off the field after the Jax debacle, he was captured on camera, telling at least one of the Jagoffs that they would not have one had he played. Remember that video from the SB...where Ben asks Cowher, "We're gonna keep playin, right?"  and gives him this evil eye look?  Well, you can bet that Ben's been giving Cowher that look all week. You're playin me..right?  Ben's a fuckin warrior. He's also the equivalent of God to this football team. He's been practicing. He'll be in there!!

Jagoffs have a rough DL, but they're hurting. Spicer is questionable. We'll run a little. Ben will pass like he's not mixed a beat.

Defensively, we will kick Leftwichs ass!!!  We'll kick Fred Taylors ass for good measure!!  Might as well kick Del Rio's ass, too. Steeler fans will take over the joint, fuck up their city afterwards.

If our Steeler team is smarting from any game last year...its from that Jags game!!  Steelers want to win this game!!!
