2015 NFL Draft Day 2 Review

May 02, 2015 by Steel Haven

Round 2

  1. New York Giants (from Tennessee)

    S Landon Collins - Alabama

Love Mel Blount's Cowboy hat. Really like that they have team legends announce second round picks. There were some rumors the Steelers were trying to move up for this pick. Giants gave up 2nd, 4th and 7th rounders to move up 8 slots. Price for the Steelers would have been high trying to get up from 56. Giants have no one to play either safety position. The aggressive, no-nonsense Collins excels in the box against the run. He has the ability to cover TEs and physical slot receivers, but is not someone you want sitting back in coverage.
    • Needs: S, RT/G, DE, DT, LB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): OT E Flowers
    .
  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

T/G Donovan Smith - Penn St

The A-train announces the pick. Right side of the line is a dumpster fire. Smith was a fast riser with excellent athleticism that some considered an underachiever at State College despite starting 31 games at LT. Graduated before leaving school with a year of eligibility remaining. A little surprised Smith went ahead of Jake Fisher. TJ Clemmings has obviously been red flagged due to injury, La'El Collins might currently be undraftable.
    • Needs: QB, DE, OT/G, S, RB, CB
    • Previous pick(s): QB J Winston
    .
  3. Oakland Raiders

DE Mario Edwards Jr. - Florida St

Versatile, high ceiling athlete. Can rush the passer from inside or play strong side end. Struggled last season after gaining weight at the behest of his coaching staff, got back under 280 lbs. in the offseason and tested off the charts physically.
    • Needs: DE, WR, RT/G, DT, CB, S
    • Previous pick(s): WR A Cooper
    .
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars

    RB TJ Yeldon - Alabama

Obviously fills a need with neither Gerhart nor Robinson suited to be feature backs. Not my favorite player. Had five backs still on my board ranked higher for what that is worth (likely nothing). Lacks game breaking ability and never really took the next step after a stellar freshman campaign despite being surrounded by incredible talent.
    • Needs: DE/OLB, FS, RB, M/WLB, WR, C/G
    • Previous pick(s): DE/OLB D Fowler
    .
  5. New York Jets

WR Devin Smith - Ohio St

Emerson Boozer announces the pick. Gotta love it.... Stretch the field deep threat added to big receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Red flagged Strong and Green-Beckham continue to drop.
    • Needs: QB, RT/G, OLB, RB, S, WR
    • Previous pick(s): DE/DT L Williams
    .
  6. Washington Redskins

OLB/DE Preston Smith - Mississippi St

Announced as an OLB. Versatile, long and powerful. Can rush the passer from inside in sub-packages. Set the edge on the strong side standing up. Adding bulk and playing with his hand on the ground as a disruptive 5-technique not out of the question in the future.
    • Needs: RT/G, LB, FS, CB, RB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): T/G B Scherff
    .
  7. Chicago Bears

NT/DE Eddie Goldman - Florida St

Endorsed by Dick Butkus! I actually have a Butkus signed throwback Illinois mini helmet.
    • Needs: S, RT/G, NT/DE, LB, WR, CB
    • Previous pick(s): WR K White
    .
  8. Tennessee Titans (from NY Giants)

    WR Dorial Green-Beckham - Oklahoma

Raw athlete. A swing for the fences. Huge gamble off the field. I really like that they moved down for extra picks before taking the plunge.
    • Needs: QB, RT/G, RB, NT/DE, WR, ILB
    • Previous pick(s): QB M Mariota
    .
  9. Carolina Panthers (from St. Louis)

    WR Devin Funchess - Michigan

Traded a 2nd, 3rd and 6th rounder to move up for this pick. Seems excessive. Obviously trying to create matchup problems for opponents with Kelvin Benjamin. Not sure who is going to block for Cam Newton.
    • Needs: OT, WR, DE, SS, CB, RB
    • Previous pick(s): OLB S Thompson
    .
  10. Atlanta Falcons

    CB Jaelen Collins - LSU

Type of big corner Dan Quinn covets. High upside gamble on size/athleticism due to relative inexperience, off the field issues.
    • Needs: DE/OLB, RB, C/G, FS, TE, MLB
    • Previous pick(s): OLB/DE V Beasley
    .
  11. Houston Texans (from Cleveland)

LB Benardrick McKinney - Mississippi St

Versatile prospect that could fill two needs. A somewhat unique two down run stuffer inside with the skills to be an edge rusher in sub-packages.
    • Needs: QB, ILB, WR, OLB, C/G, DE
    • Previous pick(s): CB K Johnson
    .
  12. New Orleans Saints

    OLB Hau'oli Kikaha, Washington

Relentless pass rusher lacking top size, athleticism. He has previously suffered a pair of torn ACLs. Said to have been removed from multiple teams' boards due to medical red flags.
    • Needs: LB, OG, TE, WR, CB, NT/DE
    • Previous pick(s): OT A Peat, ILB S Anthony
    .
  13. Minnesota Vikings

    ILB Eric Kendricks - UCLA

Good value, fills a need in Mike Zimmer's defense.
    • Needs: CB, OT/G, MLB, S, WR, RB
    • Previous pick(s): CB T Waynes
    .
  14. San Francisco 49ers

    S Jaquiski Tartt - Samford

Physical specimen from lower level of competition. Confusing reach with bigger needs, better talent on the board.
    • Needs: ILB, CB, DE, WR, OG, TE
    • Previous pick(s): DE A Armstead
    .
  15. Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami)

    CB/S Eric Rowe - Utah

I'm heartbroken the Steelers didn't/couldn't trade up to take Rowe. Another player from the PAC-12 for Chip Kelly.
    • Needs: WR, S, OLB, CB, OG, DE
    • Previous pick(s): WR N Agholor
    .
  16. San Diego Chargers

ILB Denzell Perryman - Miami FL

Tackling machine, special teams demon. Lacks prototypical size. Can he stay on the field on passing downs?
    • Needs: RB, NT, G/C, WR, OLB, OT
    • Previous pick(s): RB M Gordon
    .
  17. Kansas City Chiefs

    OL Mike Morse - Missouri

Announced as a center. First player taken I did not have as a day two pick. Interesting scheme fit/need reach.
    • Needs: C/G, CB, OT, ILB, DE, WR
    • Previous pick(s): CB M Peters
    .
  18. Buffalo Bills

CB Ron Darby - Florida St

Nice, well deserved reception for Jim Kelly. Didn't think they would go corner. Darby not a player I liked for the Steelers so I don't particularly care.
    • Needs: QB, RT, ILB, S, NT/DE, OLB
    • Previous pick(s): none
    .
  19. Cleveland Browns (from Houston)

    OLB/DE Nate Orchard - Utah

Needed an edge rusher. Orchard exploded his final season with a school record 18.5 sacks and a nation leading 28 QB knockdowns. One dimensional, a project that will work hard to improve the other facets of his game.
    • Needs: QB, WR, OLB, NT/DE, TE, RT
    • Previous pick(s): NT D Shelton, OL C Erving
    .
  20. Miami Dolphins (from Philadelphia)

    DT Jordan Phillips - Oklahoma

Huge space eater to play next to Ndamukong Suh. Running against this defense won't be easy. Nice value after trading down.
    • Needs: OG, CB, WR, S, OLB, DT
    • Previous pick(s): WR D Parker
    .
  21. Cincinnati Bengals

    T/G Jake Fisher - Oregon

Icky's enthusiasm is infectious. Double dip at OT. Unlike Ogbuehi can play immediately.
    • Needs: DT, DE, OT, WR, LB, C
    • Previous pick(s): OT C Ogbuehi
    .
  22. Detroit Lions

    RB Ameer Abdullah - Nebraska

Joique Bell returning from Achilles' injury, Theo Riddick a one dimensional pass catcher. Get the position, again do not particularly like the player. Everyone raves about his intangibles. What about his lack of size, pedestrian speed, problems in protection and severe fumbling issues?
    • Needs: DT, G/C, RT, RB, CB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): G L Tomlinson
    .
  23. Baltimore Ravens (from Arizona)

    TE Maxx Williams - Minnesota

Jump the Steelers for Williams. Honestly think he would have been Pittsburgh's pick. Depressing he ends up in the division.
    • Needs: WR, CB, RB, TE, S, OLB/DE
    • Previous pick(s): WR B Perriman
    .
  24. Pittsburgh Steelers

    CB Senquez Golson - Mississippi

This is a concession that a corner is needed on the field immediately. There are some good things about Golson. Top competitor, smooth, cat quick, solid recovery speed, productive, excellent hands, experienced in zones. His 16 career interceptions are more than Ike Taylor's 14 career interceptions in 12 seasons. Sounds great when put that way.... The problem is he's slightly under 5'9", weighs 176 lbs. and appears physically maxed out.
    • Needs: CB, OLB, TE, WR, S, DE
    • Previous pick(s): OLB A Dupree
    .
  25. St. Louis Rams (from Carolina)

    Robby Havenstein - Wisconsin

Came into the draft with only five picks so trade down for a pair of extra selections makes sense. Somewhat athletically limited, bruising run blocker fits what Jeff Fisher wants to do with Todd Gurley now in the fold.
    • Needs: C, OT, OG, WR, CB, QB
    • Previous pick(s): RB T Gurley
    .
  26. Arizona Cardinals (from Baltimore)

    OLB/DE Markus Golden - Missouri

Another team that smartly traded down to target what they believe to be a scheme fit.
    • Needs: OLB, ILB, NT/DE, RB, CB, S
    • Previous pick(s): OT DJ Humphries
    .
  27. Denver Broncos

OT Ty Sambrailo - Colorado St

Has a better than average chance to start immediately on the right side in Gary Kubiak's zone blocking scheme.
    • Needs: G/C, FS, RT, NT, TE, ILB
    • Previous pick(s): OLB S Ray
    .
  28. Dallas Cowboys

    DE Randy Gregory - Nebraska

Jerry Jones gambles big. Good time to make this move, Gregory lands in an environment that should give him at least some chance to stay clean.
    • Needs: RB, CB, DE, DT, S, OLB
    • Previous pick(s): CB B Jones
    .
  29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from Indianapolis)

    T/G Ali Marpet - Hobart

Building an offensive line for Jameis Winston a smart move.
    • Needs: QB, DE, OT/G, S, RB, CB
    • Previous pick(s): QB J Winston, OT D Smith
    .
  30. Green Bay Packers

CB/S Quinten Rollins - Miami OH

Interesting developmental prospect with only a year of experience at the college level after playing basketball. The kind of high upside project I guess the Steelers felt they could not take with such an immediate need.
    • Needs: ILB, CB, NT/DE, TE, OLB, RT/G
    • Previous pick(s): S D Randall
    .
  31. Seattle Seahawks

    DE/OLB Frank Clark - Michigan

A Pete Carroll special. Perfect scheme fit. Thrown off his college team in November after an ugly domestic violence incident. Not charged at behest of victim. Probably not on the draft boards of quite a few teams.
    • Needs: WR, CB, DT, G/C, DE, S
    • Previous pick(s): none
    .
  32. New England Patriots

    SS Jordan Richards - Stanford

Intelligent, instinctive team leader lacking athleticism. At the least will contribute on special teams. Bill Belichick like Carroll knows what he wants in a player which is part of the reason why these teams are picking at the bottom of the draft.
    • Needs: CB, OG, WR, DT, RB, S
    • Previous pick(s): DT M Brown

Round 3

  1. Indianapolis Colts (from Tampa Bay)

CB D'Joun Smith - Florida Atlantic

Perfectly fine pick in a vacuum. Do not understand why they refuse to draft offensive linemen to help protect Andrew Luck.
    • Needs: S, G/C, RT, ILB, CB, RB
    • Previous pick(s): WR P Dorsett
    .
  2. Tennessee Titans

    T/G Jeremiah Poutasi - Utah

Need an immediate starter at RT.
    • Needs: QB, RT/G, RB, NT/DE, WR, ILB
    • Previous pick(s): QB M Mariota, D Green-Beckham
    .
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars

G AJ Cann - South Carolina

Solid, unsexy selection on experienced, physical interior lineman. Still can't understand why the Colts refused to take one of the last two players drafted with their pick.
    • Needs: DE/OLB, FS, RB, M/WLB, WR, C/G
    • Previous pick(s): DE/OLB D Fowler, TJ Yeldon
    .
  4. Oakland Raiders

TE Clive Walford - Miami FL

Reggie McKenzie continues to prove he is very good at finding talent in the draft. Alas his proclivity for signing over the hill veterans could be his undoing.
    • Needs: DE, WR, RT/G, DT, CB, S
    • Previous pick(s): WR A Cooper, DE M Edwards
    .
  5. Seattle Seahawks

WR Tyler Lockett - Kansas St

Having four compensatory picks allow them to swap 3rd rounders at somewhat ridiculous price of 4th, 5th and 6th round picks. Slot receiver and returner was a need.
    • Needs: WR, CB, DT, G/C, DE, S
    • Previous pick(s): DE/OLB F Clark
    .
  6. Houston Texans (from NY Jets)

WR Jalen Strong - Arizona St

Stong's slide ends. Three compensatory picks allowed them to move up twice on the second day to target value at positions of need.
    • Needs: QB, ILB, WR, OLB, C/G, DE
    • Previous pick(s): CB K Johnson, LB B McKinney
    .
  7. Chicago Bears

    C Hroniss Grasu - Oregon

    Had to replace Robert Garza.
    • Needs: S, RT/G, NT/DE, LB, WR, CB
    • Previous pick(s): WR K White, NT/DE E Goldman
    .
  8. St. Louis Rams

    T/G Jamon Brown - Louisville

Double dip on physical run blocking linemen.
    • Needs: C, OT, OG, WR, CB, QB
    • Previous pick(s): RB T Gurley, OT R Havenstein
    .
  9. Atlanta Falcons

    RB Tevin Coleman - Indiana

Really like this player. Fills a need and fits scheme.
    • Needs: DE/OLB, RB, C/G, FS, TE, MLB
    • Previous pick(s): OLB/DE V Beasley, CB J Collins
    .
  10. New York Giants

    DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa - UCLA

A player that fell during the process because he only seemed suited to a four man front.
    • Needs: S, RT/G, DE, DT, LB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): OT E Flowers, SS L Collins
    .
  11. New Orleans Saints

QB Garrett Grayson - Colorado St

Extra picks allow them to go fishing for Brees' eventual replacement. So much for rumors they were infatuated with Petty.
    • Needs: LB, OG, TE, WR, CB, NT/DE
    • Previous pick(s): OT A Peat, ILB S Anthony, OLB H Kikaha
    .
  12. Kansas City Chiefs (from Minnesota)

    WR Chris Conley - Georgia

Jump up at only the cost of a 6th rounder to take athletic fast riser that wasn't utilized enough in Athens.
    • Needs: C/G, CB, OT, ILB, DE, WR
    • Previous pick(s): CB M Peters, C M Morse
    .
  13. Cleveland Browns

RB Duke Johnson - Miami FL

If this was a fallback after Conley was taken they got lucky in my opinion. Johnson with Isaiah Crowell as the short yardage back is a solid duo. Terrance West is nothing special.
    • Needs: QB, WR, OLB, NT/DE, TE, RT
    • Previous pick(s): NT D Shelton, OL C Erving, OLB N Orchard
    .
  14. New Orleans Saints (from Miami)

CB PJ Williams - Florida St

Continue to fortify the defense with a player that could have gone higher except for off the field issues.
    • Needs: LB, OG, TE, WR, CB, NT/DE
    • Previous pick(s): OT A Peat, ILB S Anthony, OLB H Kikaha, QB G Grayson
    .
  15. San Francisco 49ers

    OB/DE Eli Harold - Virginia

    Can't count on Aldon Smith.
    • Needs: ILB, CB, DE, WR, OG, TE
    • Previous pick(s): DE A Armstead, S J Tartt
    .
  16. Detroit Lions (through Minnesota from Kansas City)

    CB Alex Carter - Stanford

Thought they were moving up for one of the falling interior defensive linemen. Seem to always be looking for a young corner.
    • Needs: DT, G/C, RT, RB, CB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): G L Tomlinson, A Abdullah
    .
  17. Buffalo Bills

    G John Miller - Louisville

A player I really like that should be able to step in immediately.
    • Needs: QB, RT, ILB, S, NT/DE, OLB
    • Previous pick(s): CB R Darby
    .
  18. New York Jets (from Houston)

    OLB Lorenzo Mauldin - Louisville

Got a 5th and 7th rounder plus DeVier Posey for swap of 3rd rounders. Edge rusher completes what should be a dominating defense.
    • Needs: QB, RT/G, OLB, RB, S, WR
    • Previous pick(s): DE/DT L Williams, WR D Smith
    .
  19. San Diego Chargers

CB Craig Mager - Texas St

A favorite of scouts. Honestly never got to see him play.
    • Needs: RB, NT, G/C, WR, OLB, OT
    • Previous pick(s): RB M Gordon, ILB D Perryman
    .
  20. Philadelphia Eagles

    OLB Jordan Hicks - exas

Chip Kelly takes someone not from the PAC-12, hell freezes over. Top athlete that hasn't been able to stay healthy.
    • Needs: WR, S, OLB, CB, OG, DE
    • Previous pick(s): WR N Agholor, CB/S E Rowe
    .
  21. Cincinnati Bengals

    TE Tyler Kroft - Rutgers

Blocker first to pair with Tyler Eifert, replace Jermaine Gresham.
    • Needs: DT, DE, OT, WR, LB, C
    • Previous pick(s): OT C Ogbuehi, J Fisher
    .
  22. Arizona Cardinals

RB David Johnson - Northern Iowa

The between the tackles runner they need.
    • Needs: OLB, ILB, NT/DE, RB, CB, S
    • Previous pick(s): OT DJ Humphries, OLB M Golden
    .
  23. Pittsburgh Steelers

    WR Sammie Coates - Auburn

Depth chart at receiver only went three deep. Inconsistent home run hitting developmental project similar to Martavis Bryant coming out of school. Passing game coaching, scheme and QB play was severely lacking.
    • Needs: CB, OLB, TE, WR, S, DE
    • Previous pick(s): OLB A Dupree, S Golson
    .
  24. Minnesota Vikings (from Detroit)

    DE Danielle Hunter - LSU

Move down twice in the 3rd round, get a player that could have legitimately gone in the 2nd round
    • Needs: CB, OT/G, MLB, S, WR, RB
    • Previous pick(s): CB T Waynes, ILB E Kendricks
    .
  25. St. Louis Rams (from Carolina)

QB Sean Mannion - Oregon St

Smart, big, average arm and slow feet. Sounds like Nick Foles. Bryce Petty and Brett Hundley continue to plummet.
    • Needs: C, OT, OG, WR, CB, QB
    • Previous pick(s): RB T Gurley, R Havenstein, J Brown
    .
  26. Baltimore Ravens

    DT/DE Carl Davis - Iowa

Nice scheme fit, good value. Dropped due to inconsistency.
    • Needs: WR, CB, RB, TE, S, OLB/DE
    • Previous pick(s): WR B Perriman, TE M Williams
    .
  27. Dallas Cowboys

    OT Chaz Green - Florida

Athleticism got him drafted earlier than expected. Needs to add bulk. Can't believe they didn't take a back on the first two days.
    • Needs: RB, CB, DE, DT, S, OLB
    • Previous pick(s): CB B Jones, DE R Gregory
    .
  28. Denver Broncos

TE Jeff Heuerman - Ohio St

Lost Julius Thomas in free agency so this pick is not a shocker.
    • Needs: G/C, FS, RT, NT, TE, ILB
    • Previous pick(s): OLB S Ray, T Sambrailo
    .
  29. Indianapolis Colts

    DE Henry Anderson - Standord

Love the player, solid scheme fit. Remain completely baffled they refuse to take an offensive lineman.
    • Needs: S, G/C, RT, ILB, CB, RB
    • Previous pick(s): WR P Dorsett, CB D Smith
    .
  30. Green Bay Packers

    WR Ty Montgomery - Stanford

Like the Steelers needed a fourth receiver.
      • Needs: ILB, CB, NT/DE, TE, OLB, RT/G
      • Previous pick(s): S D Randall, CB Q Rollins
    .
  31. Washington Redskins (from Seattle)

    RB Matt Jones - Florida

Physical chain mover is clearly not a passing game replacement for Roy Helu.
    • Needs: RT/G, LB, FS, CB, RB, WR
    • Previous pick(s): T/G B Scherff, OLB/DE P Smith
    .
  32. Cleveland Browns

DE/DT Xavier Cooper - Washington St

Continue to rebuild the defensive front 7.
    • Needs: QB, WR, OLB, NT/DE, TE, RT
    • Previous pick(s): NT D Shelton, OL C Erving, OLB N Orchard, RB D Johnson
    .
  33. New England Patriots (compensatory)

    OLB Geneo Grissom - Oklahoma

Inconsistent, somewhat raw. Versatile. Has stood up and played with his hand on the ground. Rushed off the edge and dropped into coverage. Also has been mentioned as a possible developmental TE. A Belichick special.
    • Needs: CB, OG, WR, DT, RB, S
    • Previous pick(s): DT M Brown, S J Richards
    .
  34. Kansas City Chiefs (compensatory)

CB Steve Nelson - Oregon St

Double dip at corner, something I'm sure many Steelers fans wouldn't have minded their favorite team doing....
    • Needs: C/G, CB, OT, ILB, DE, WR
    • Previous pick(s): CB M Peters, OL M Morse, WR C Conley
    .
  35. Cincinnati Bengals (compensatory)

    I/OLB Paul Dawson - TCU

Vontaze Burfict insurance. Interesting in that Dawson has been compared to Burfict because of his instinctive playmaking ability despite a lack of speed and perceived character concerns.
    • Needs: DT, DE, OT, WR, LB, C
    • Previous pick(s): OT C Ogbuehi, OT J Fisher, TE T Kroft
