Stillers - Foreskins Postgame Analysis and Grades

The 6-2 Stillers went east for what was practically a home game, to face the 7-2 Wash Commanders, er, Deadskins.   After being down 10 in the 3Q, the Stillers stormed back and got the thin win.   Still Mill was there in-person and got to see the W in person.

Grades:

QB:   Wilson got the start.   Had an absolutely dreadful 1H, tossing for all of 48 yards in an effort that set football back 39 years.   About 3 plays prior to the 1st TD, he had Fyboy WIDE open down the seam, and somehow missed the 6-7” TE.    This occurred again in the 2H.

To his credit, he didn’t sulk or mope.   After a mediocre 3Q, had a solid 4Q.   1 good quarter out of 4 doesn’t earn a top grade.    C

RB:

Harris  –  an okay day, with 21 rushes for 53 yards.  No grabs, which was disappointing (not his fault).    Averaging less than 3 YPC in nothing to fawn or rave about.    The stupid quickie tosses, WIDE, were tried again this game, with zero success.  (1 went for a no gain, another was a 2 yard loss, and there was probably a third.)   C-

Warren –  Had a solid game with 14 rushes for 66 yards.  Hit daylight with authority.   Obviously the fumble hurts the grade, although its reasonable to argue he should have been ruled down due to stopping of forward progress.   B

Cord Patt – had 3 rushes for 14.

FB:    Conn Hey saw some work in short yardage.

WR:

Pickens –  Big game, with 5 grabs for 91, including an outstanding pluck of a TD grab, and also a nifty grab along the sidelines for a 343 yard gainer.   I wasn’t overly pleased with his lackadaisical “touch” of the DB after the long pass was INT’d in the 3Q.   The DB returned this for like 40 yards, and luckily, a ref saw Pick touch the TB with the tip of his pinkie.    Pickens was in PERFECT position, with eons of time, to harshly touch the DB with 2 full hands.  Ya don’t take a chance there with a laz pinkie-touch.   A-

Van Jeff – Worthless as usual, despite playing most of the snaps opposite Pick.   Zero garbs, 2 targets, 0 nuthing.   D-

Austin – PeePee had 2 grabs for 20.  In a fit of stupidity, Art Smith kept targeting PeePee on deep lobs, which is as futile as installing a screen door on a submarine.  In fact, eePee had just about as many targets (6) as Pickens (7), which is ludicrous.   Mercifully, PeePee got nicked up and had to leave the game, lest he’d have gotten 9 or 10 targets.   C

Skowronek – thankfully was not targeted or used.

Mike Williams – acquired 5 days ago, he was never used, and only got used late in the game because PeePee was injured.   Hauled in a 32 yard TD on his only target.   Art Smith will probably push him back onto the bench next week.     B+

Rom Wilson – The Great Savior is on IR.

TE:

Pat FryBoy –  3 grabs for 17, and a short TD.  Ain’t it grande how Hextall Khan lavished this guy with a huge, fatty contract just before opening day, just so he could grab 3 catches a game for 6 yards a clip ??     B-

Darnell – Grabbed 1 pass for 6, dropped another.

Con Heyward – never targeted.

MyHole Pruitt – dropped a cake-easy pass like a clumsy fool.

OL:  Overall, the line (Moore, Seumalo, Frazier, McCormick, Jones) had a half decent game.   There were 3 sacks, but at least 2 of these were plays where Wilson held the ball forever.   Wils mostly had decent time in the pocket.   The ground blocking paved the way for about 140 yards rushing.    B

DL:

Heyward –  Big Scam had a couple of sacks, although 1 was a Dong Sack in which the QB held the ball long and then got flushed.  The other was a lay in which the interior blocker basically never blocked Scammer, and he came in more or less untouched.   Probably was a botched blocking assignment.   These were the ONLY TWO SOLOS the Scam Artist had all game.  Otherwise, he lumbered and wallowed about, doing little or nothing.   Go watched Eckeler’s TD plunge late in the 1H, as Scam got mauled and bullied, and got shoved aside while the RB rumbled into the EZ.   Make more, do more.     D

Ogunjobi –  played ok.

Lowdermilk – played some; did little.

Benton – Not doing enough.   Did have a good read and stop of Daniels on what appeared to be a designed run late in the game.    C

LB:

Queen – Made a couple strong, stellar plays in attacking a run and making the stick.  Was fairly stunned.   Hasd 6 solos.  Is playing much better than the half-azzed crap he was providing back in Sep.     A-

Landon Rob – Had 4 solos in a solid effort.

Watt – Rolled the donut – no solos, no assists.   Did have a key nip of the ball, forcing an INC, in the 4Q.   C

Highsmith – He, too, rolled the donut……zero solos, zero assists, zero nothing.   Jack fuq nothing.   Of course, unlike Watt, Fraudsmith isn’t being double teamed 50+ % of the time.   The Fraud had a Don’t Sack, but that was negated when TWO flags were thrown on the PIT secondary, which, of course, is what caused the sack in the first place (e.g., the QB holding the ball longer because TWO of gis receivers were illegally being dealt with.)   Bumsmith got injured late in the game and is probably out for an extended time. We’ll shed no tears.   F

Herbig – did not dress, due to the ham.

Pey Wilson – got some PT, but didn’t even make it onto the stat sheet.

Pres Smith – got a Dong Sack, plus a cheap TFL when a flea flicker got blown up and the “passer” (a WR) had nowhere to go.   I wasn’t overly impressed.     B-

DB

Joey Porter Jr. -  a grisly, brutal day at the office.   Flagged 3 times.  Scorched by McLaurin a coupla time.   Not good.    C-

Donte Jackson – got injured.

Kazee – helped stop Ertz on the late 4th & 9 that was incorrectly ruled short of the line to gain.

DeShon Elliot – strong, stellar effort.   Reads and plays the run like a man possessed.   A-

Minkah -  feebly flailed and whiffed on the short slant to McLaurin, which turned into a 54 yard gainer.   Very poor.  Is playing like a 5th round draft pick making $2M per year as a journeyman.   Ain’t doing anywhere near enough to IMPACT game.   Ain’t near enough.     D

Bishop – Wasn’t tooled or abused.

Spec teams:

Waitman –   punted mostly pretty well.     A

Boswell – a rare game in which Bos attempted no FGs.   Very rare.

The coverage team got a freebie FR when the clumsy Wash punt returned coughed up a punt as soon as it hit him.   (Dude had done the same with an earlier punt as well.)    The KO coverage sucked sewage water.  Atrocious.

The big play was the failed fake punt from the PIT 16 in the 1Q.   I fully believe this was an automatic audible, in which Killebrew has the automatic call if no one covers the wide man.   In other words, this wasn’t a planned fake punt.   Wash went for a block, and as such, they peeled a man off Pierre to help the rush.    As it was, Pierre, the fool, dropped a lollipop lob that a 4th grader could have caught.     Overall:  C-

OC:  Art Smith had a rough 1H, with the offense struggling and bumbling.  They put up 14, in large part due to a circus catch by Pickens on the 1st TD and a 14 yard drive thanks to the muffed punt.    The O wasn’t exactly clicking in the 2H, either.   Smitty showed his infatuation with wide runs and throwing long, contested balls to PeePee Austin, neither of which worked for crap today.   C

DC:   Austin had some struggles, particular as the secondary got shredded via WIDE open receivers, poor tackling, or a bevy of penalties.   This ain’t a dominant defense at all.   C

HC:  Mike Asslin will get loads of credit for “going into hostile territory and coming out with a W”.   Fact is, this venue wasn’t hostile at all.   I was there.  It felt like 55% of the fans were Stiller fans.   It was basically a home game played in a different stadium.   It was a gritty win, and we’ll take it.  Still not pleased with how soft n’ cheezy the NFL’s highest paid defense is playing.   B

Synopsis:  A thin win against a solid foe.    Not much time to gloat or rejoice, as the team faces the PoeBirds next Sunday and then goes on the road into a legit, hostile territory in Clev for a Thur nite tussle.
