Steelers Blow Huge Lead

Marty Ball is alive and well...

In a painful display of ultra-conservative football at its worst, the Pittsburgh Steelers squandered a 17 point lead with about 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter of a home game. It's all been said before

  • Cowher plays not to lose...
  • Cowher gets too conservative at the wrong time...
  • Cowher just wants to be in a position to win...
  • Cowher can't win the big game...

Such comments go to the attitude Cowher projects and subsequently the attitude that is manifested in the play calling and performance of his football team. Until now, it could have been argued that Cowher was snake-bit, the victim of outrageous fortune, been slighted by the hidden hand or the some other nonsense.

Now there is proof exposing the absolute idiocy and cowardice that is the mindset of one Billy Cowher:

"I'm not sure what to tell my players - [I've never been here...]" said Bill, "I'll tell you one thing, We did not lose this football game... We didn't lose this fotball game... When the standings come out tomorrow we will have 3 loses."

Bill Cowher added that last bit emphatically about not losing. In short, He was just shy of being impressed with the outcome!

How can any coach or player say such a thing and be proud of not losing a game in which he had:

  • A 17 point lead
  • The ball with 10 minutes to play and a 17 point lead
  • A home game with a 17 point lead

It's easy - if your goal is not to lose, then you have achieved your goal. Think about it, his goal, with a 17 point lead, was not to win the game - his goal was not to lose it.

This is not the only example from the game where Marty Jr's attitude prevented the Steelers from taking advantage of their own success. Three times the Steelers had the Falcons in 3rd and 20+. Three times the defense was instructed to play well off the Atlanta recievers. Three times the defense was instructed not to put pressure on Vick by bringing a 5th man on the rush. Three times the Falcons easily converted these third down chances into first downs.

Just more evidence of the mindset of the coaching staff ruled by Coach Cowher: "Third and long - great, we can play deep and prevent a TD. If they get the first down at least we can say they didn't score."

On offense, the Steelers threw down field once in the final 10 minutes of the fourth quarter and in overtime - a completion to Burress down the middle. Otherwise, it was quick little slants and the predictable Amos run most of the time. There was no desire to put the Falcons out of the game at any time. Just as amazing was the Steelers settling for a 48 yard FG attempt in OT by the league's worst kicker on the league's worst kicking surface. There was no real attempt to get the ball closer once FG Bill thought Peterson was in range. Pathetic.

Joey Porter said it felt like a lose... Meanwhile, his coach seemed all too satified with the outcome. Unfortunately for the Steelers, Super Bowl victories will be very hard to come by when their talent is underutilized and the modus operandi of the Head Coach is not that of a champion.

How many more opportunities must be squandered before Cowher figures out that you play to win?

As a foot note, Marty Sr also blew a lead in the final few minutes to the St Loius Rams today - like father like son.
