Clev 24, Stillers 19 ...... Nov 21, 2024 …………Game # 11
Stillers - Browns Postgame Analysis and Grades
The 8-2 Stillers mosied some 125 miles to face the lowly 2-8 Brownies. Clev led at the half, 10-3, and at the end of the 3Q, 10-6. The Stillers scored a go-ahead TD midway thru the 4Q, but The Softee Defense allowed a 9 play TD drive for Clev to get the winning points with about a minute left in the game.
Due to the late nite nature of this game, this will be a more succinct report.
Grades:
QB: Wilson got the start. Held the ball a wee bit long, opening series, which was a sack by Garrett. Had PeePee Austin WIDE open on a deep ball, but poorly underthrew the pass, and it was tackled for a 48-yard gain.
Allowed himself to be stripped of the ball in the pocket, late 2Q, for a brutal turnover that gave Clev 3 points.
Was 11-13 for 147 in the 1H, but the offense scored just 3 points and bogged down continually.
Missed with an errant pass to a wide open Pickens in the EZ, 4Q, right after the Herbig strip. Could have been the WR’s fault, tough to say.
Had a nice “paper” game, going 21 of 28 for 270. But the offense scored only 2 TDs and wallowed around in slop far too much. C-
Fields – came in at QB, initial series, 3d & 1, but Darnell was flagged for a false start. Ran a keeper on 4th & 2, next series, and was stopped stone cold. 30 yard run, 4Q.
RB:
Harris – had a so-so game. Felt he left some yards on the table. C
Warren – ripped off 16 yard run, 2nd play of game. Had some decent plays. B
Cord Patt – stopped cold on an end around, 4Q. Was thrown an oddball lob/oop pass for the 2-pointer, 4Q, which failed miserably.
FB: Conn Hey – whiffed on a cut block, first play of game, causing a 1 yard loss.
WR:
Pickens – Good grab (almost bobbled it away) of a spotty deepish lob, 2nd series, good for 32 yards. 4 grabs for 48. B-
Van Jeff – On 3d & 6, grabbed a 4 yard pass. Was wide open down the sidelines on a blow coverage, 3Q, and gained 35. B
Austin – grabbed a 48-yard deep lob, early 2Q, as the Clev DB was slow and clumsy in coverage. Grabbed a 23-yard TD, 4Q. A
Mike Williams – rotted the bench.
TE:
Pat FryBoy – big grab, 3d & 5, opening series. Gained about 22. Got blown up on the Cord Patterson end around, by Devin Bush of all people. Very soft. 4 grabs for 59. B-
Darnell – grabbed 6 yard pass, 1st series. Flagged for a false start, 3d &1, first series.
Con Heyward – Flagged for a false start, 2d series. Flagged for illegal formation, early 2Q. D
OL: Overall, the line (Moore, Seumalo, Frazier, McCormick, Jones) had a miserable game.
Moore got abused by Garrett for a sack, 1st series, forcing a 58 yard FG that went wide right. Got abused again, late 2Q, for a strip sack by Garrett.
So much for all fawning and adulation over Zack Frazier. He WHIFFED on Garrett, on the final play of the 1H, causing a sack. He looked like complete ass on this play.
Early in the 3Q, the line got no push at all on a 4th & 2-feet, and Warren lost yardage on a line plunge.
Frazier delivered a high SG snap, late 3Q, which caused a 5 yard loss. All in all, a poor game by this crew. D-
DL:
Heyward – Batted a pass, 3Q. Was slow as whale dung to chase down Winston on the 4Q TD. Had ONE solo the entire game. Just one ! D-
Ogunjobi – did little.
Lowdermilk – had 1 solo.
Benton – did very little.
LB:
Queen – Ran right by the Clev RB on the 4th & 1 plunge, 2Q, which was easily converted. Had a couple decent plays. Had only 2 solos, which ain’t nearly good enough. C+
Landon Rob – fairly quiet. Zero solos.
Watt – zero pressures, 1H. Good stop of Chubb, late 3Q. This was his only solo all game long. D
Highsmith – again sat out due to injury.
Pres Smith – weak tackle attempt on the 4th & 1 plunge, early 4Q. Did little.
Herbig – Good run stop, early 3Q. Huge strip sack, mid 4Q, for a huge turnover. Solid game. B
Pay Wilson – chipped in here and there.
DB
Joey Porter Jr. - Got abused by Jeudy for a couple grabs on the 2Q TD march. Got scorched on the late 3d & 7, for a hefty gainer. Very poor. C
Donte Jackson – got abused for a downfield pass, late 4Q. Got a Dong INT on a hideous mis-throw.
Kazee – didn’t do much.
DeShon Elliot – forced a fumble, early 3Q.
Minkah - dawdled around all game and did very, very little. 3 solos, ZERO impact. Has regressed to being some middling journeyman safety, even though he’s 1 of THE highest paid players on the team. Unacceptable, despite all the bullshoit the local media will claim in their fawning of him. Make more, do more. Do something, FFS. D-
Bishop – flagged for a silly DOG penalty, late in the game.
Spec teams:
Waitman – Epic shank of a punt, late 4Q, for 15 yards. I believe this was his only punt. D
Boswell – missed a 58 yard FG, 1Q, which, in those conditions, was understandable. Booted 2 FGs in the snow squall.
Kazee was rightfully flagged for a pers foul on the first Clev punt, blocking a Clev gunner 8 yards OOB. A stupid flag that negated a poor 12 yard punt and gave the ball back to Clev.
Scam Heyward was flagged for a false start, 2Q, on a 43 yard FG try. Luckily, Bos nailed the 48-yarder.
OC: On the 1-year anniversary of Matt Canada being fired, Art Smith decided to pay homage to Canada, dusting off a leftover playbook and running a bland, brainless scheme all game long. All game long.
4th & 2, 1Q, and Fields runs some gimpy-assed play that looks like it'd never been practiced before. Ever. Got stopped stone cold. Sheer garbage by Art Smith.
2-point try, 4Q, and Smith calls a fade to…..Cord Patterson…..? Da fuq was that?
It was a nite full of grab bag garbage. Complete rubbish. 1Q, spent plunging into 8-man fronts. Offense is getting worse as the season wears on. F+
DC: Austin had his weekly luxury, this week facing a garbage backup QB like Winston.
This vaunted D got gashed for a 12-play, 80-yard TD march, 2Q. They got gashed for a 61-yard TD drive in the 4Q. Both, against a garbage backup QB in Winston. Then, late in the game, they allowed a 9 play, 45 yard game-winning TD march. Pure vomit. Highest paid defense in the NFL. Allows 14 points to a Winston-led offense in the 4th Qtr amid a snow squall. Make more, do more. F
HC: Mike Asslin did a poor job of preparation and having the team ready to hunt bear.
Allowed massive clock to run off, late 1H, and went into the locker room with a timeout in his back pocket. Where exactly does one deposit unused timeouts ??
Asslin accepted the penalty after the 3d & 2 inc pass, late in the game, rather than forcing a decision and a 4th & 2. Dumb. He then p!ssed away a timeout soon thereafter. More stupidity. Asslin can’t manage clockm nor late game situations. Ever. His decision very early in the game to try a 58 yard FG, in those windy conditions, was pure asininity.
Stoogelin was 1-4-1 in his last 6 trips to Clev. He’s now 1-5-1. Another Asslin egg lay. F-
Synopsis: A very predictable loss. A classic Asslin egg lay. 11 days off, and then a game at Cinci.
