Five by Eight
In a pre-draft press conference, Kevin Colbert described the Steelers methodology as targeting up to five players per slot. Answering another question, Mr. Colbert indicated that position, or need, trumps BPA, to some degree. While I have no idea what the board in the Steelers War Room looks like, the team needs outlined here previously might be met with::
1.27:
- SS Troy Polamalu. High impact potential but, if the Saints dont get him at 18, the Raiders may move up past the Colts to do so. If not, hell be in Indy.
- CB Sammy Davis: Several Mocks have this player going to the Browns at 21; 3rd CB on my board for sometime and, evidently, that view is spreading.
- RB Larry Johnson: Fits the new look Steeler offense.
- FS/CB Andre Woolfolk: IMO, a need pick though this player has risen to #5 on my DB board.
- DE
Kenny Peterson: Tyler Brayton
is a pick more chic but IMO Brayton has exceptional bust potential.
2.59:
- FS Rashean Mathis: Probably wont be there but PFW rated him the 11th DB overall and that is 2.59 territory.
- SS Ken Hamlin: The new hammer.
- Dime DE Calvin Pace: Measurables similar to KGB; was best in conference at his position despite having no help from his Wake Forest teammates
- OLB Antwan Peek: The only problem is that this selection would enfranchise the 3-4.
- CB Kevin Garrett: In this area, the quality is generally with smaller CB; Garrett was the fastest guy flying at the Combine.
3.92:
- CB/FS Nnmadi Asomugha: Size, speed, production and intelligence; had more picks in the Pac 10 than did Dennis Weathersby.
- OLB
Tully Banta-Cain: Porter-like
workouts but, like Peek, would cement the 3-4.
- SS
Bryan Scott: Big hybrid SS/CB
who timed at PSU Pro Day with top 5 WR Bryant Johnson.
- WR/TE
Teyo Johnson: The only receiver on this board.
- RB
Artose Pinner: Like LJ, fits
the new system.
4.125:
- NT
Ian Scott
- NT
Colin Cole
- S
Terrence Kiel: IMO, a reach any earlier.
- CB
Charles Tillman: About the only mid-round CB Id consider but more
than likely wont be there.
- Dime
DE Osi Umenyiora: 2003
redshirt
5. 163:
- DT
Terrence Martin
- DT
Matt Leonard
- QB
Brian St. Pierre
- RB/FB BJ Askew: Receiving ability fits the system; Big 10 pedigree fits the franchise.
- LB
Aaron Hunt
6.200:
- DE Antonio Garay.
- SS
Jeremy Shabazz
- DE James
Lee
- LB
Sam Williams: Has great dime
DE measurables but did little on the field at Fresno State, alma mater of
both Chris Conrad and Jahine Arnold..
- LB
Shantee Orr
7.242:
- DB
Jesse Sowells
- LB
Brandon Green
- S/WR
Anthony Floyd
- NCB/KR
Lyneris Elpheage
- S
Corey Jenkins
Five FA:
- CB
Leigh Bodden
- NT Tim
Love
- LB
Khalid Abdullah
- NT
Roy Attieh
- FB
Casey Urlacher
O-line, TE and WR are not considered in the preceding; in fact, there may be some quality ROT snow plows at 4.125 and WR will be, as usual, broadly distributed. Three statistical indicators really matter; those are:
- Takeaway differential.
- YPA differential.
- Rushing attempt differential.
