2015 NFL Draft Defensive Value Board, v3.0

April 28, 2015 by Steel Haven

*Underclassmen

  Round 1 Round 2 Round 3
DT *Leonard Williams, USC (DE)
Danny Shelton, Washington (NT)
*Malcom Brown, Texas (NT/DE)
*Eddie Goldman, Florida St (NT)
*Jordan Phillips, Oklahoma (NT/DE)
Carl Davis, Iowa (NT/DE)
Grady Jarrett, Clemson
Michael Bennett, Ohio St
*Xavier Cooper, Washington St (DE)
Marcus Hardison, Arizona St (DE)
Tyeler Davison, Fresno St
Gabe Wright, Auburn
Williams (6'5", 302, 4.97) possesses a rare combination of power and athleticism. Scheme versatile with the ability to play anywhere across the line, he has yet to scratch the surface of his potential which is a scary proposition. Shelton (6'2", 339, 5.64, 34 bpr) is a physically dominating space eating run stuffer a bit overrated as a pocket collapsing penetrator. Should not be a top 15 pick, might not have been a first rounder last year. Brown (6'2", 319, 5.05, 26 bpr) improved by leaps-and-bounds last season. Considered a player on the rise, his combination of size and athleticism should allow him to play multiple spots in multiple fronts. Goldman (6'4", 336, 5.27 pro day) is a mauler able to shed blocks and make tackles at the line of scrimmage. The buzz has quieted a bit on Phillips (6'5", 329, 5.17, 28 bpr) after he didn't test quite as well athletically as expected. Huge with long arms, he can take over a game or disappear for long stretches. Davis (6'5", 320, 5.07, 28 bpr pro day) is another scheme versatile power player with surprising athleticism like Brown. Jarrett (6'1", 302, 5.06, 30 bpr) and Bennett (6'2", 293, 4.98 pro day) are both tenacious, undersized, athletic, penetrating interior presences best suited to a four man front. Cooper (6'3", 293, 4.86, 29 bpr) and Hardison (6'3", 307, 4.92 pro day, 27 bpr) are also both athletic 3-technique prospects with a bit more length and bulk which makes a projection to 5-technique more realistic. Davison (6'2", 316, 5.18, 32 bpr) is a powerful interior presence likely limited to playing the nose in an over four man front. Wright (6'3", 300, 5.07, 34 bpr) disappointed his final season as part of a rotation on a deep depth chart. Explosiveness is tough to ignore, although he too is best suited to a four man front likely as a 3-technique.

McLendon and man-mountain McCullers are set inside. Not much interest was shown in pure nose tackle prospects during the pre-draft process strongly suggesting the position is not a priority.
DE *Dante Fowler, Florida (OLB)
*Randy Gregory, Nebraska (OLB)
*Arik Armstead, Oregon (DT)
*Shane Ray, Missouri (OLB)
Owamagbe Odighizuwa, UCLA (OLB)
Preston Smith, Mississippi St
*Danielle Hunter, LSU (OLB)
*Mario Edwards, Florida St (DT)
Henry Anderson, Stanford (DT)
Trey Flowers, Arkansas (OLB)
ZaDarius Smith, Kentucky
Anthony Chickillo, Miami FL (OLB)
The versatile Fowler (6'3", 261, 4.60, 19 bpr) played all over the field. He's a rangy, quick athlete with the explosiveness to create havoc as a pass rusher and size/power to hold up the edge against the run. High-ceiling, low-floor project Gregory (6'5", 235, 4.64, 24 bpr) also played all over the field with his hand on the ground, standing up on the edge and even blitzing from ILB. Lean and athletic, his frame has room to add some bulk. A failed marijuana test at the combine clouds his draft status. Armstead (6'7", 292, 5.1, 24 bpr) is another boom-or-bust prospect that showed improvement in his final season. Still a work in progress as a pass rusher, at the least his incredible size should allow him to become a dominant run stuffer as a 5-technique. Ray (6'3", 245, 4.64 pro day, 21 bpr) is a scheme versatile elite edge rusher with the athleticism to stand up and the strength to play with his hand on the ground. Toe injury might have caused slight slide. Idiocy of getting busted two days before the draft for marijuana possession could drop him to the second day. Odighizuwa (6'3", 267, 4.62, 25 bpr) and P Smith (6'5", 271, 4.74, 24 bpr) fit best as strong side ends in four man fronts. Odighizuwa has the athleticism to stand up on the strong side of a 3-4. He is unlikely to ever develop into a dynamic pass rusher. P Smith has the frame to add bulk to possibly line up as an end in a three man front in a scheme that prizes penetration over two-gap run stuffing ability. Hunter (6'5", 252, 4.57, 25 bpr) has the frame to play with his hand on the ground and length/athleticism to stand up. Edwards (6'3", 279, 4.84, 32 bpr) and Anderson (6'6", 294, 5.03, 23 bpr pro day) are 3-4 end projects. Edwards is incredibly athletic with the frame to add bulk. Anderson is a more traditional 5-technique prospect. Flowers (6'2", 266, 4.92, 4.83 pro day, 28 bpr) projects as a strong side edge setter in a 3-4 that will never be a dynamic rusher. Z Smith (6'4", 274, 4.83, 4.75 pro day, 23 bpr) is a high effort somewhat limited athlete that appears to only be a fit on the strong side of a four man front. Chickillo (6'3", 267, 4.79, 27 bpr) showed more athleticism in the post season than expected making a conversion to standing up outside in an odd man front not out of the question.

Tuitt's development in the second half of the season solidified the starting unit with Heyward and McLendon. End backup Keisel was released, expected to retire. Free agent bust Thomas is still around, getting rid of him to free up cap space isn't the worst idea. A value pick on the first or second day is possible although a third day depth addition more likely. Someone like Armstead in the first, Davis in the second or Anderson in the third would have to be seriously considered. None are particularly likely to be available. Interestingly enough the linemen visiting/interviewed during the process were one gap disruptors Smith, Jarrett, Bennett, Cooper and Wright that don’t seem to be scheme fits. This could signal some change under new DC Keith Butler, but is more likely just the front office and coaching staff doing their due diligence. Third day 5-technique prospects include Walton (6'5", 319, 5.25, 25 bpr), Lott (6'4", 314, 4.99, 30 bpr), Sokoli (6'5", 290, 4.84 pro day, 31 bpr pro day) and Blackson (6'4", 318, 5.02, 20 bpr).
ILB   Eric Kendricks, UCLA
*Benardrick McKinney, Miss St (OLB)
Stephone Anthony, Clemson
Denzel Perryman, Miami FL
Paul Dawson, TCU (OLB)
The slightly undersized Kendricks (6', 232, 4.61, 19 pbr, 22 bpr pro day) is the brother of Eagles starter Mychal (although rumors suggest Kelly is looking to move him). McKinney (6'4", 246, 4.66, 16 bpr) is a somewhat unique two down run stuffer inside with the skills to be an edge rusher in sub-packages. Keeping him out of pass coverage seems prudent. Anthony (6'3", 243, 4.56, 23 bpr) has the speed and skills to be the rare every down inside backer. Perryman (5'11", 236, 4.78, 4.7 pro day, 27 bpr, 30 bpr pro day) is an old school fill the hole attacking 2-down thumper that would have been more valued 20 or so years ago. Dawson (6', 235, 4.93, 4.75 pro day, 21 bpr) is an instinctive, productive playmaker. Pro day alleviated some fears generated by exceedingly poor combine workout. Anonymous rumors about character concerns probably shouldn't but could also have some effect on his stock.

Depth chart set with Timmons, Shazier, Williams, Spence and Zumwalt.
OLB Vic Beasley, Clemson (DE)
Bud Dupree, Kentucky (DE)
*Eli Harold, Virginia (DE)
*Shaq Thompson, Washington (S/RB)
Nate Orchard, Utah (DE)
Lorenzo Mauldin, Louisville (DE)
Hau'oli Kikaha, Washington (DE)
*Kwon Alexander, LSU (ILB)
Beasley (6'3", 246, 4.53, 35 bpr) and Dupree (6'4", 269, 4.56) have both displayed incredible athleticism in the post season. The explosive Harold (6'3", 247, 4.6, 24 bpr pro day) possesses the perfect skill set to stand up on the edge, needs experience in coverage. Thompson (6', 228, 4.64, 20 bpr pro day) is an undersized, 4-3 weak side OLB that some project to SS. Out of necessity he also played RB last season and excelled. Orchard (6'3", 250, 4.8) blossomed in his final season with a school record 18.5 sacks and a nation leading 28 QB knockdowns. Struggles against run and inexperienced in coverage. A project that will work hard to improve. Mauldin (6'4", 249, 4.85, 23 bpr) is a confident, high effort, high character player that consistently gives second effort. Kikaha (6'2", 253, 4.9 pro day, 20 bpr pro day) is a relentless pass rusher lacking top size, athleticism. He has previously suffered a pair of torn ACLs. Alexander (6'1", 227, 4.55, 24 bpr) makes up for his lack of length and awareness with speed and determination. Should contribute immediately on special teams.

Lack explosiveness on the edge. Harrison and Moats were resigned as stopgaps. At least the aging Harrison won't back down or ever quit. Moats has a role as a two down edge setter. Could the light come on for former first rounder Jones? He currently looks like a bust with only 3 career sacks in two seasons. Dupree falling would be a dream scenario. Gregory and more likely Ray could be off the board at least on the first day mostly because of their abject stupidity. Hopefully Bell wasn't at dinner when Tomlin went out with Ray. Odighizuwa and Flowers project more as future Moats upgrades than explosive difference makers. Harold, Hunter, Orchard in the second round or Mauldin, Kikaha in the third are possible edge rush targets. Third day possibilities contacted include Tull (6'2", 246, 4.57 pro day, 24 bpr), Trail (6'7", 269, 4.91, 24 bpr), Golden (6'2", 260, 4.90, 4.74 pro day, 17 bpr pro day), Valles (6'5", 251, 4.83), Emanuel (6'3", 255, 4.77, 27 bpr) and Dantzler (6'3", 225, 4.6 regional combine, 21 bpr regional combine). Tull needs labrum surgery, showed his toughness by still lifting at the combine.
CB *Trae Waynes, Michigan St
*Jalen Collins, LSU
Byron Jones, UConn (FS)
Eric Rowe, Utah (FS)
Kevin Johnson, Wake Forest
*Marcus Peters, Washington
*Ron Darby, Florida St
Quinten Rollins, Miami OH (FS)
*PJ Williams, Florida St
*Alex Carter, Stanford (FS)
D'Joun Smith, Florida Atlantic
Josh Shaw, USC (FS)
Doran Grant, Ohio St (FS)
Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Oregon (FS)
Steve Nelson, Oregon St
Waynes (6', 186, 4.31, 19 bpr) blazed at the combined and shined in workouts further emphasizing what was evident on game tape, he is the top corner. Collins (6'1", 203, 4.48) started only 10 games before coming out early. He possesses the complete physical package to develop into a dominating pass and run defender. Jones (6'1", 199, 4.4 pro day) and Rowe (6'1", 205, 4.45, 19 bpr) converted from safety for their final seasons. Jones missed the final 5 games due to a shoulder injury. He set an all-time combine long jump record of 12'3". Johnson (6', 188, 4.52) has the skills to excel in zone coverage, but is rail thin and looks physically incapable of ever providing decent run support. Peters (6', 197, 4.53, 17 bpr) was kicked off Washington due to clashes with the new coaching staff and then performed only adequately at the combine/his pro day. Darby (5'11, 193, 4.38, 12 bpr, 15 bpr pro day) is a fluid slot corner. Rollins (5'11", 195, 4.57) started four seasons at PG on the basketball court before deciding to play football his senior season. Named MAC defensive player of the year in his first/only season on the football field since HS. Has the quick feet, smooth hips and ability to change gears expected of a PG. Lack of recovery speed might make safety a better fit. Williams (6', 194, 4.57, 4.45 pro day, 12 bpr) had a recent DUI charge thrown out which can't hurt his prospects, neither can the greatly improved 40 time at his pro day. Carter (6', 196, 4.51, 17 bpr) is a big, physical corner best suited to zone coverages. Smith (5'10", 187, 4.45, 4.42 pro day, 18 bpr, 21 bpr pro day) has above average instincts and ball skills. Shaw (6', 201, 4.44, 26 bpr) has experience outside, in the slot and also at safety. Lack of fluidity makes him a better fit for zone schemes. Grant (5'10", 200, 4.44, 21 bpr) is smart with solid ball skills and tackling ability. Size could limit him to the slot at the next level after mostly playing press boundary corner. Ekpre-Olomu (5'9", 192) tore his ACL in practice for the national championship semifinal. Fluid, competitive, confident with the ability to adjust on the fly. Nelson (5'10", 197, 4.49, 4.49 pro day, 19 bpr) is an aggressive, physical downhill player that excels in run support and off coverage with the receiver in front of him. Struggles to turn and run in man coverage.

At least two picks (arguably three) need to be used on this position, at least one (arguably two) on the first two days. Taylor has retired, he wouldn't have been back anyway. His play (and health) fell off precipitously in the past several seasons. Almost no team would have been hurt this badly by losing a mediocre talent like McCain in free agency. Allen was benched after signing a big money extension. He'll be given every opportunity to rebound. The 30 year old Gay is easily the top corner on the roster, he really should be playing the slot in the nickel. Blake has fourth corner upside. Colbert is an aficionado of the best player available within reason. That really should be a corner on the first day unless an edge rusher falls. Collins has the youth, upside Tomlin seems to prefer. Jones or Rowe might be better suited to step in immediately. Johnson and Peters don't seem like Steelers picks. Rollins, Carter, Shaw or Grant on the second day seem like realistic possibilities. Possible third day picks that visited/interviewed include Golston (5'9", 176, 4.46, 15 bpr), Gaines (5'10", 180, 4.44), fast rising Roberts (6', 182. 4.36 pro day, 23 bpr pro day), White (5'9", 183, 4.63, 18 bpr), Diggs (5'9", 196, 4.56, 17 bpr), troubled off the field Cox (6'1", 191, 4.36, 15 bpr), McDonald (6'1", 200, 4.42 pro day, 10 bpr pro day) and conversion project Marshall (6'1", 207, 4.54, 12 bpr).
S *Landon Collins, Alabama (SS) Damarious Randall, Arizona St (FS/CB) Jaquiski Tartt, Samford (SS)
Derron Smith, Fresno St (FS)
Adrian Amos, Penn St (FS/CB)
*James Sample, Louisville (SS)
The aggressive, no-nonsense Collins (6', 228, 4.53, 16 bpr pro day) excels in the box against the run. Has the ability to cover TEs and physical slot receivers. Not someone you want sitting back in coverage. Randall (5'11, 196, 4.46, 14 bpr) is a tough, physical jolting tackler with good hands as a former WR that is a bit of a strong/free tweener. Undersized to be a true in the box safety, only average instincts/skills in coverage. Could get a look as a slot corner. Tartt (6'1", 221, 4.53, 4.47 pro day, 13 bpr pro day) is big, well-built and ultra-competitive. Three year starter as a two-deep or single-high safety, would probably benefit from playing nearer the line of scrimmage at the next level. Productive four year starter Smith (5'10", 200, 4.6 pro day, 18 bpr pro day) is a solid tackler with solid coverage skills, lack of height/length the problem. He is actually fairly similar as a prospect to Randall. Amos (6', 218, 4.56, 21 bpr pro day) started his last 37 games. He's a risk adverse CFer type with the speed and size to cover TEs or slot receivers in sub-packages. Single season starter, early entrant Sample (6'2", 209, 4.56, 17 bpr pro day) is a physical in the box downhill run defender that lacks instincts in coverage at least in part due to inexperience.

The Polamalu era is over. Thomas was drafted three years ago to take his place. He will be paired with Mitchell with the resigned Allen in reserve. Polamalu was a shell of his former self the past several seasons so his loss should not have much effect on the field. Depth is the issue. Special teamer Golden is the fourth safety. Collins was brought in for a visit and would provide value if available at 22. A day three roll of the dice seems the much more likely course. Third day sliders Prewitt (6'2", 208, 4.6, 4.46 pro day, 11 bpr, 12 bpr pro day) and Holliwell (6', 218, 4.65 pro day, 17 bpr) along with Eskridge (6'3", 208, 4.63) and Whitehead (5'11", 197, 4.59, 4.48 pro day, 15 bpr) were interviewed. All four are free safety prospects. Thompson listed as a 4-3 OLB could be an interesting conversion project. He is an ultra-athletic splash player that can cover TEs or RBs, rush the passer from anywhere on the field and maybe even fill a role on the other side of the ball as an emergency back. For upside think of current DB coach Lake’s playing career in the long term with more versatility in the short term. Thompson's draft stock is all over the board, 22 is likely too high for such a luxury pick and his availability is doubtful at 56.
