Power Rankings (week 17)

Rnk LW* Team Record Comments
1. 2. Arizona Cardinals 13-2 Dominating on both sides of the ball.
2. 1. Carolina Panthers 14-1 '72 Dolphins live on in history as league's only undefeated Super Bowl winner.
3. 3. New England Patriots 12-3 Brady tied Favre for most career TD passes with a single franchise.
4. 5. Kansas City Chiefs 10-5 Rookie Peters is tied for the league lead in interceptions with 8.
5. 9. Denver Broncos 11-4 Came back from 11 point halftime deficit after not scoring in the second half the previous 2 weeks.
6. 4. Cincinnati Bengals 11-4 Probably blew the first round bye which likely means a playoff game without Dalton. McCarron needing an MRI on his wrist further complicates matters. Could Lewis remain winless in the postseason?
7. 10. New York Jets 10-5 Scored touchdown in first possession of OT after Belichick won the toss, inexplicably kicked.
8. 11. Minnesota Vikings 10-5 Getting hot at the right time, win on Sunday night in Lambeau certainly not out of the question.
9. 6. Seattle Seahawks 9-6 Wilson has taken the next step, but complete lack of a running game due to multiple injuries to backs a major issue. Desperately need Lynch back at 100% for the playoffs.
10. 7. Green Bay Packers 10-5 Trendy thing to say is Rodgers will find a way to win. Decimated offensive line, Nelson injury and failure of Adams to develop may make that impossible.
11. 8. Pittsburgh Steelers 9-6 Losing to Mallet led Ravens with playoffs on the line a disgrace for everyone in the organization. To be fair Williams actually deserves an exemption from that harsh evaluation, he came to play.
12. 12. Washington Redskins 8-7 Clinched, nice to be in the NFC East.
13. 13. Houston Texans 8-7 Multi-retread Weeden has been serviceable, Hoyer in last stage of concussion protocol.
14. 14. Atlanta Falcons 8-7 Unflappable Jones kept his usual calm demeanor, torched Norman. Will Beckham learn from his mistake the previous week?
15. 16. St. Louis Rams 7-8 Physically dominated the Seahawks for the second time this season. Need to find a QB.
16. 18. Indianapolis Colts 7-8 Luck still not medically cleared.
17. 19. Buffalo Bills 7-8 Ryan would like nothing better than to knock his former team out of the playoffs.
18. 21. Oakland Raiders 7-8 Have they played their last game in Oakland?
19. 22. Chicago Bears 6-9 Langford clearly ready for full workload, Forte will undoubtedly be allowed to leave in free agency.
20. 23. Detriot Lions 6-9 Any talk of moving on from Stafford has been silenced.
21. 24. New Orleans Saints 6-9 Torn plantar fascia could not slow down Brees.
22. 15. New York Giants 6-9 Had no answers on offense with Beckham suspended.
23. 17. Philadelphia Eagles 6-9 Somewhat shockingly fired Kelly before the end of the season likely because of turmoil he caused among players after being given control of personnel decisions. Really can't blame Lurie, perhaps he should actually be commended for not compounding his original mistake. Kelly's recent statement that his offensive scheme with the lowest time of possession in the league didn't directly lead to his defense’s struggles was patently ridiculous. Kelly needs to take a year off and then return to college. Any NFL team hiring him would be beyond foolish which is why I sort of expect the Dolphins, Titans and/or Browns to be interested.
24. 20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6-9 Limping down the stretch with 3 straight losses. Winston still gives them something to build upon.
25. 31. Baltimore Ravens 5-10 Swept Steelers in regular season for only the third time in franchise history.
26. 25. Miami Dolphins 5-10 Heads are going to roll. Wait, they already have.
27. 26. Jacksonville Jaguars 5-10 Already announced Bradley will return in '16.
28. 27. San Diego Chargers 4-11 Took 3 points off the board up by 8 in the fourth quarter, TD pass on next play was overturned on review, missed ensuing FG attempt on the drive to keep lead at 5, gave up TD and 2 point conversion to go behind by 3, then kicked their own field goal in final minute to tie, ended up losing in OT. Deep breath. Been that kind of year.
29. 28. Dallas Cowboys 4-11 Would have been better off keeping Weeden, at least based on what he’s done in Houston.
30. 29. San Francisco 49ers 4-11 Gabbert as a stopgap while they try to develop a second or even third round QB is not the worst option in the world. Should not reach in the first round given the less than inspiring class of QBs likely to be available in the draft.
31. 30. Tennessee Titans 3-12 Starting over. Mariota does make the head coaching job somewhat desirable assuming GM Webster does not return. Early rumors connect them to Pats offensive coordinator McDaniels.
32. 32. Cleveland Browns 3-12 Why does Pettine care so much that Manziel had some drinks at a Christmas party?
