NCAA Scouting Preview, Week 5

NCAA Scouting Preview (Week 5) ~by SteelPerch

I am going to try something new and each week I will take a look at the college football schedule and try to find some interesting match-ups related to the upcoming NFL Draft, more importantly the Steelers draft. I'll concentrate on Seniors and some Juniors that are likely to come out. Focus will be on the big games of the weekend, and look primarily at positions of interest as it relates to the Steelers needs. This is the 2nd week Ive done the article, last weeks article can be found in the NCAA/Draft talk forum. Here goes:

West Virginia vs South Florida
South Florida is an up and coming program with lots of speed and talent. Do yourself a favor and watch them play if you get a chance. This game may go a long way to determining the Big East champion. The first match-up to watch will be WVU monster FB Owen Schmitt (63 260) vs S. Florida MLB Ben Moffit (62 240).Schmitt is a classic bulldozer FB who opens all the lanes for Steve Slaton (510 190) and Pat White. He projects as a classic FB or H-back in the pros.I could see the Stillers using him to replace Kreider and possibly Tuman as the 3rd TE.Moffit projects to one of the top 3-4 ILB prospects in the draft. The next great match-up is WVU WR Darius Raynaud (511 200) vs South Florida CB's Mike Jenkins (6'0 200) and Trae Williams (5'11 190).These two guys are maybe the best CB duo in the nation. Jenkins has prototype NFL size and speed, while Williams is a burner with great ball skills. He picked off 7 passes last year, and a few more already this year. Both guys are day 1 prospects.Spend all of your time watching the outside skill positions in this game. Both teams are built on speed/athletes, and they are weak in the trenches. The only decent prospect at the line of scrimmage is WVU DT Keilen Dykes (65 295) who has prototype 3-4 DE size, and will be a late round pick.

Others to watch:

West Virginia
Antonio Lewis CB (510 185) late rounder

Georgia vs Mississippi
The ones to watch in this game will be Ole Miss RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis (511 225) running behind Junior stud OT Michael Oher (6'5 325).Oher may be the best LT in the draft if he comes out.Ellis should be a mid-round pick and fits the bill as a power back to compliment Parker. They will go up against Georgia MLB Brandon Miller (64 260) who projects as a mid round 3-4 ILB prospect. It should be a good war to watch. Georgia has some solid Guards to watch in Velasco and Adams. They should have their way with the Ole Miss D-line.

Others to watch:

Georgia:
Greg Lumpkin RB (6'1 225) late round
Fernando Velasco OG (6'4 320)
Thomas Brown RB (5'8 200) late round
Coleman Watson TE (6'6 260 late round
Keith Saunders DE/OLB (6'4 255) late round
Brandon Miller 6'5 255 (OLB) mid round

Wisconsin vs Michigan State
Typical Big 10 big uglies game, so of course we will watch the trenches and the backs.Michigan State FB/RB Jehuu Caulcrick (60 255) is a guy I like a lot.I think he compares well to a Dookie Davenport or a TJ Duckett. He has that rare combo of size and speed, and he can block a bit.He will be going up against Wisconsin DT Nick Hayden (65 300) who looks to be a mid round 3-4 DE prospect.Hayden reminds me a bit of an Aaron Smith type.A really nice sleeper 3-4 OLB prospect to watch is Michigan State DE Jonal Saint-Dic (61 255). A foreign born player with limited experience, he is a terror rushing the passer and has prototype 3-4 OLB size.

Others to watch:

Wisconsin
Paul Hubbard WR (6'4 215) mid round
Luke Swann WR (6'0 190) late round/FA

Michigan State
Tavaris Gooden OLB (6'2 240) midround
Kellen Davis TE (6'6 255) late round
Mike Gyetvia OT (67 310) late round

John Masters C (64 290) late round

Jonal Saint-Dic DE (61 255) mid round

LSU vs Tulane
This is more about watching LSU than the game.LSU has early round NFL talent at just about every position.Tulane counters with a good power back prospect Matt Forte (62 225).He will have a long day as LSU has an NFL caliber D-line with 1st round prospects DT Glen Dorsey (6'2 300) and Junior DE Tyson Jackson (6'5 295) dominating the line of scrimmage. Jackson would be a great 3-4 DE. WR Early Doucet (6'0 200) of LSU is yet another 1st round lock if he plays in this game.

Other players to watch:

LSU
Jacob Hester FB (6'0 230) late round
Chevius Jackson CB (6'0 190) day 1
Will Arnold OG (6'4 315) late round
Ali Highsmith OLB (6'1 225) day 1
Matt Flynn QB (6'3 230) mid round
Jon Zenon CB (5'9 180) mid round

Alabama vs Florida State
Another game with good talent at the skill positions.Florida State WR DeCody Fagg (64 215) will match up against CB Simeon Castille (61 190).Fagg should be a mid round pick and Castille looks like a 1st rounder.Alabama's WR DJ Hall (63 190) is another guy to watch as he is the type of tall playmaking WR the Steelers still lack. He is likely a 2nd rounder. The Steelers seem to grab a FSU player every year so it makes sense to keep an eye on them.

Other players to watch:

'Bama
DJ Hall - WR (6'3 190) 2nd round
Simeon Castille - CB (6'1 190) 1st round
Wallace Gilberry - DE (6'4 265) late round

Florida State

Roger Williams S (60 200) mid/late round
Andre Fluellen DE (64 280) mid round

Jacky Claude OG (64 290) late round/FA

Shannon Boatman OT (67 310) late round

Pitt vs Virginia
Now we get to see a great trench match-up.VAs DE Chris Long (son of Howie) (64 285) will battle vs Pitts OTs Jeff Otah (66 330) and Mike McGlynn (66 315).Long is a 1st round lock and Otah is a day 1 lock.I think Otah may project to a RG or RT in the NFL.McGlynn is probably a late round pick.Long is probably a 4-3 DE, but could possibly play 3-4 DE if he bulks up.I prefer him in the 4-3 though.

Other prospects:

Pitt

Derrick Strong TE (65 265) mid round
Jamar Adams (6'2 210) mid round
Chris McKillop DE (63 250) late round
