Steelers, Ravens & Looking Ahead

A great day of watching the Steelers whip the Browns collective ass, followed by the shitty Redskins raising our hopes, only to lose out to the Ravens, which are fast becoming the most hated collection of individuals assembled as a sports team

Steeler thoughts:

  1. Both the kick & punt coverage continues to be impressive. Were through 5 games, and not one big return against us.
  2. Im not going to join in the Critical Chorus with the anti-Bettis refrain. As long as he scores when hes inserted on the goal line, whats the beef??I certainly dont care who scores the TDs, and I would hope that Duce, Plax, Hines, Cowher, Rooney, the equipment manager, and the beer vendor dont care either.Furthermore, it probably was a good idea to take Duce out mid-3Q.In watching the tape, the trainer was working on Duces groin after his TD run early in 1Q.Yeswe could have gone to Haynes, but consider as I did, that the only way we lose that game is probably with some grave fuck-up, like a fumble deep insider our territory.Cleveland was stacking the line, ripping at the ball.Bettis was probably the safest bet at that point. That said, pitching to him wide, as happened on 3rd & 1, was not very smart.
  3. Only a Cowher coached team could get the ball with 2:34 left in the half, 2 time-outs in the pocket, on their own 32, and be forced to kick a field goal with 1st & goal from the 6, as theyve run out of time.As Ive written before, this is not a case of mismanagement, but in very intentional conservative management, with Cowher hedging his bets, trying to move the ball, while guarding against Cleveland having no time should the Steelers O fail.I particularly didnt like such conservatism yesterday, considering how well the Steelers were moving on O, coupled with needing to kick off to start the second half.Tough to be too critical, though, as Cleve went 3 & out on the first possession of the 2nd half, the Steelers drove for a TD, effectively salting the game away.

No on to the Ravens, and the puke-inducing Sunday night coverage:

  1. Do you suppose that Suzy Kolber has scheduled her conjugal visits with Jamal Lewis in the Big House. Not only does she make him sound like a goddam hero; his coach anoints him captain for last nights game, like this guys a fuckin hero for copping a plea for assisting in a cocaine buy.His choices:take the plea or risk 10 years being introduced to the joys of bustin rocks (former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld coined this phrase).I think this is an area where the Steelers really are different from the Ravens, Raiders, etc.Remembera mere two months after Super Bowl XXX, the Steelers cut Bam Morris, the guy who was one Nelly ODonnell pick away from contending for Super Bowl MVP.The cut of Bam-Bam conincided almost immediately with him pleading guilty to a drug charge, and led directly to the coming to Pittsburgh of.Jerome Bettis.I think we won on that deal.
  2. How many times during the course of a game, do you supposed Paul Maguire starts a sentence with, Ill tell ya what..For Chrissakes, Paul, just tell us!!!Between this line, and his annoying guffaws after big plays, Im finding him more and more annoying.
  3. Enough of miking up Ray Lewis, for Gods sake. And dont try to convince me that he doesnt intentionally ham it up.
  4. With Lewis, Lewis and now Asshole Deion, the Ravens likely have the biggest collection of thugs & punks to ever play the game. They are much more hateable than the Oakland Raiders ever were.

Looking ahead:

1.      God help us if we lose to the Washington Redskins. They should be the only gimme game remaining on the schedule (I never consider any away game to be a gimme game).

2.      Im hoping, hoping, hoping that its the Pittsburgh Steelers that end the streak of the New England Patriots. We can do it, too, by picking on Tyrone Poole, and about 25 carries for Duce.
